I don't like your idea. Frankly, there are more elegant ways to protect your software. The one I like best is to provide documentation that is so attractive and so supportive of the product, that it is a _must_have_ item. About the only thing you gain by crippling a program is a bad company image.

Good point. What a thrill it is to get a new Origin Systems game. Not so much from the game itself, ('course their games are great) but the overall feel, the aura of one of their packages. Fantastic cover art, beautifully typeset instructions, cloth maps, Ankhs, tool kits, whatever. There latest for the Amiga, Moebius, includes a black Ninja headband. neat stuff. -John

John, I understand what you're saying but not all software companies can afford such elaborate package design and all the stuff included in the package. Big companies like Activison, EA, Broderbund etc. are far better equipped finacially for things like that and realistically it's the game you're going to play, the other junk evenutally will not be used for much. Understood Marlene. I guess the previous message should just be used to illustrate _one_ form of slowing down piracy, without being a nuisance to the user. -John

That's a pretty expensive solution, though… all up front, too. Just a thought. –Ben–

Yeah, Ben, you're right. I guess in a perfect world, that's the way it would be done, but for smaller enterprises it really isn't an option. In those cases, I fall back to the premise that if you price it inexpensive enough, no one would bother to rip it off. There are not _perfect_ solutions to this one, though. –mjw–
