#C=A and Timothy Leary

I've received some strongly worded mail from Commodore users who object to
any association C=A might have with Dr. Timothy Leary. Leary is supposed to
be developing a software program/series called Mind Movies for the Amiga.
Here's a portion of one message that I received: "[Leary] is associated
with more burnt out brains and deaths [drug] than anyone since the Vietnam
War effort."
Obviously, the writer wasn't pleased with Leary's supposed association with
the Amiga (as he went on to say). All of the folks I've talked with so far
have said they wouldn't buy the package just because Leary's name would be
on it. Others have said (vehemently!) that they'd boycott C=A for further
purchases. Anyone care to comment?

Sounds to me the burnouts are all still up and about, writing letters of
protest about Leary.

I didn't pay any attention to Leary's mad ravings back in the 60's,
I sure as hell am not going to start now! NO, I wouldn't buy anything with
his name on it.
A religious philosopher of the second century (or thereabouts) named
Origin, during his youth, castrated himself, under the idea that it would
bring him closer to mystic purity. He later regretted his action. He also
wrote nearly a hundred volumes of sound, cogent, even inspired philosophy.
Regardless of the quality of the ideas he presented, though, folks would
say "Are you serious? Are you going to listen to that man? Don't you know
what he did?"
This is the classic case of 'ad hominem' argument, the condemning of an
idea as unworthy because its source is questionable. I believe the quality
of an author's work is a completely different matter from the quality of
his character. Would you condemn the Amiga Gadget Editor because it's
author's youth was not without blemish? Should we refuse to listen to A
Child's Christmas in Wales because it's poet abused ethanol?
If Leary writes a good program, why not enjoy it?

Anyone is entitled to write software – boycotting a company because someone
doesn't like a particular person is ridiculous. Boycott the software, not
the computer.

Come on James, what sort of comments do you expect us to make about people
who are so misguided as to confuse Commodore and their machine with a
company that is paying someone to design a software package? Are you even
aware that Leary has done the same thing for other computers?

Jim, Tim has always been a rather unique thinker and will probably write
some pretty innovative software and what better machine to write it for
than the Ami? Give the poor guy a chance, after all he's getting old and
needs some success after soooo much failure. To go from the leading drug
crazed guru to the college lecture circuit with Gordon Liddy was a big
comedown and frankly I don't know any burnt brains that can be blamed on
him, and I know alot of burnt brains. No cracks about the condition of
mine, ok?…Dave

Every look at some of the software ads 'in the back of the
magazine' for IBM MSDos? While I doubt that Leary will effect the Ami one
way or the other, I also doubt that his product could be any worse than is
avalable for any of the 'other' machines. Leary makes good(?) new. 73,
