Clearly, they do hate the rumors columns. Sadly, though, developing sw or
hw for any machine, you have to be verrrrrrry careful of who you tell
what.
But from a user perspective, rumors columns server 2 purposes. 1) Whether
to buy product X now, or wait to hear more about a rumored better product,
(assuming that the purchase of X is not an immediate need, but an
I-Want-It! situation), and 2) As grist for the mill of
Wouldn't-it-be-great-if… that developers themselves keep their eyes on.
Particularly from 2) above, there is adequate reason not to hate the
rumorists.
Rumors columns can be really damaging though. For example, say that
someone said that with 1.4 Commodore wouldn't provide Kickstart disks for
1000 owners. If one of the rumor columns picked it up, people would be
yelling and screaming like crazy, and people wouldn't be very happy.
Prospective buyers might look at something like that and say "Well, I'm not
going to buy anything from Commodore! They don't support their users!"
Things like this have happened in the past because of rumor columns, and I
think it stinks.
