Font handling is handy? Pardon?
Use a lot of fonts in an E! document. Say some from your Lion Fonts disks
(that you still have on floppy, not HD) and some from some other disks.
Then go an try to print your document. E! doesn't save bitmaps, it forces
you to put in all the various font disks so it can read the info again. E!
is about as useful as Notepad. It's spelling checker is rule based, not
word based. It misspells or makes up about as many words as it gets
correct. Generally, E! is about the level of 'excellence' I've come to
expect from MSS.
You're the only other person who's mentioned excellence!'s spelling checker
makes up words. Not a single reviewer has noticed it. As for handling
fonts, I gave up on it long ago, and use Prowrite when I need WYSIWYG.
There are various ways to write spelling checkers. Using a word list is
the most accurate but pzDably also the largest. Many spell checkers are
based upon 'rules of English". Using these rules they will make up words
that are correct according to the rules but are meaningless. Many spell
checkers will use a variation of the 2. For instance, Thunder, a well know
spell checker for the Mac and the ST uses a word list, if it doesn't find
the word it checks for a prefix or suffix. If it finds one, it strips it,
checks the spelling of the parent word, then applies the rules to the
prefix or suffix. Excellence is anything but — Mediocre! would be more
like it and that would be too kind.
Ok, Steve, challenge time. Find us a reasonably priced wp/dtp program that
is wysiwyg, multi column, good spelling checker, good font setup, very
Amiga consistent, very easy to use, good preferences control, good detached
printing control, fast, integrates full wrapped around iff hi res ham
graphics, postscript (and laser express) output option, not too large on
disk or in ram, good intelligent file requestors, arexx, fully customizable
keypad so I can set up the way I want it, etc. You find it and I can
afford it I will buy it. And, it ought to have the power of pagemaker? so
we eliminate the last excuses for not using the Amiga for wp/dtp.
