I was just reading UNIX today! and they have an article on the A3000UX,
they say the developers price for the beast is $4995. don't you guys think
it is a little too much…what will the retail price be $6995 ? too much,
but on the other hand a lot cheaper than a SUN IPC ( $9995 ) but the
performance its three times and the cost is twice of the developers price,
now before I get shot…this is what UNIX today! said so if I took that as
the 'truth' I would say the the street price of the A3000UX should be $5450
( sorry I ment LIST price ) and the developers price $3995…now we are
talking…remenber this are NOT facts just info off a magazine…

What was announced at COMDEX was that formal launch was still coming soon,
but that we are currently selling "seed/development" systems to Schools and
developers who would understand that the software is still beta (but very

hmm…interesting…now if this was true, the 'street' price will be
around…3k ? did they ever try to see who this person was ?

I'd be _very_ surprised to see a 'street' price below the price being set
for the developers/educational market, but it's hard to tell.

The new BYTE has a nice 3000UX review which says "around $4000" and
compares the machine favorably to either PC or MAc unix solutions..
Ack! I knew I gave away my issue of UNIX Today a little bit too early.
Looks like I'm going to have to steal it back. 🙂
I think the prices that are being tossed around are very reasonable. The
hardware and software gives a lot of bang for the bucks.

there are two computers that I work on SUNs and Amigas I like them both a
LOT!!, but I still think that the price it is toooo steep like I said you
could get a sparc IPC for about 9k with a 200 meg HD and has about 3 times
more MIPS not include networking hardware etc… so I think they should
drop the price down…also remenber there are and will be out there 486
boxes running a SVR4 doing 15-20 mips and althought they will NOT be 5k ,
maybe 12k-14k it muscles away. anyway I am going to buy 'AmiX' as soon as
the release it on floppies or a tape…and I hope that all I have to get is
another HD and the tape drive…and put it on my 2500…then again this
will probably cost me around $2500 vs 4k for a a3000.

486 boxes already running SVR4? I've heard some mention of this before,
but have not seen proof. Which vendors? SCO has apparently decided to
postpone a full SVR4 implementation. I'm curious as to who has done the
SVR4 implemenation for the Intel architecture.

You have to compare the entire package – 200 meg hd, 9 meg memory (1 chip,
8 fast) Ados and Unix, the 1950 monitor, free updates for a year, and I
think I read something that it also includes the Lowell University 24 bit
color card and Ethernet. Like you said, compared to the IPC and Apollo or
other unix installations it comes in at half the price. Also remember that
Unix has never been advertised by anyone as an operating system for a home
computer as its forte is multi-user set-ups.

I think 2meg chip RAM is correct, since were talking abvout the 3000, the
software includes the XWindows package, and the ethernet hardware/software
from what I've seen.
IF it comes with the 24 bit card then…it is a heck of a purchase…
