#3000 & Syquest OK?
10 messages in this thread
Is the Syquest 44M removable drive compatible with the A3000? Some
nagging but vague recollection is floating around in my memory…
Blaq!
We have hooked up several SyQuests to the external SCSI port on the 3000
with no problems. However it seems I remember at least one person on here
having a problem. Don't remember details, tho.

Charles, the catch is that you'll need a driver for the Syquest. You
might want to ask a company like GVP and see what they do.

one catch is either having a driver which recognizes cartridge changes
automatically or use of the 'diskchange' command all the time. another is
frequent soft errors on syquest since their cartridge opens up to ambient
atmosphere. heard GVP now recommends Ricoh removable drive since their
cart has an o-ring seal. my problems with syquest were frequent soft
errors. i find having a 330 meg drive is a. cheaper b. more reliable than
a removable drive and equivalent # of cartridges for it at $80-100 per
cart! it's easy to back up a quantum40 to the 330 drive and put lots of
other stuff there too. i can either have all 370 megs on line or
disconnect the power cable from the 330 and keep it 'safe'. rather have
all 330 megs on second drive on line than lying around in 8 carts.

Under 2.0 the FastFileSystem recognizes cartridge changes all by itself.

THAT'S HANDY. THANKS FOR INOO.
Ethan,
I hooked up a SyQuest drive to the external SCSI port on my A3000 and it
works just fine. It even recognises diskchanges automaticly. (I have yet to
get used to the HD light blinking every second though!) I installed no
special drivers, just used HDToolBox to configure the drive.

Charles,
I'm running one here right now… and LOVE it!!! I also have a Quantum
40 and a Quantum 210 connected. Everything seems to be working just fine.
(the SyQuest is being used as a backup device and as a data transfer medium
between two remote locations)

Dean,
What program are you using to backup to your Syquest ?

Judd,
None, I just copy directorys or complete partitions to a cartridge. It
would be nice to have a backup utility that used archive bits and was
capable of splitting a partition across carts, but at this point I have no
real need for one.
