Ever spend two hours with twelve nerds, trying to decide which type of food, and which restaurant you'd like to visit, then listening to three of them argue about *which* Szechuan place is the best in this city, and how they wrap their eggrolls? Well, add $75 for the Dev Con notes, and that's what you'll be missing. 🙂

hehehe…well, I work with a group of really bright people. No matter what the technical issue, we can always determine the best way to do things. The *only* thing we can't decide everyday is where to go to lunch. 🙂 Steve

Well, now, John – I met some awfully nice people at DevCon, but I did spend one evening doing pretty much what you describe. EVen then, several of the group were very interesting, I thought. Betty

Betty, how DO most DevCons normally go, in terms of day-to-day activities? Do they keep you really busy? I was counting the costs of getting out there. United and American today charge $479 for weekend travel. ($50 less otherwise). The hotel will be probably $250-$300. Then there is food, which could be as much as $100. And then there is DevCon itself which is $350 or so. That makes $1,200. Yikes! — Ethan

Ethan, I have attended only one DevCon. The hotel there was about $120 per night, I think – double. For the single room I had to have, it was just over $100 including tax, as best i recall. DevCon is to last four days, and you will have to arrive the afternoon before the conference starts – and probably will have to stay over until Sunday to get the best airfares, so count on either five or six nights at the hotel. Quite a lot of the meals are furnished as part of the cost. They usually have rolls and coffee, orange juice, etc., available before and between the morning sessions. Some days there were light snack-type items furnished during the lunch time but not always. Some evening meals were furnished; others were not. But I suspect you can count on the total cost being over $1000. This is just guesswork – I don't know any of the details yet. During the day, there are three or four sessions each hour, and you have to choose the one you want most. These run from about 8 AM until about 6 PM, but the evenings are free unless there are dinners to attend. The computer room is open most of the evenings, and sometimes just about all night. Some people didn't sleep enough to NEED a room! Also, lots of the developers find friends and double up on those rooms to cut costs. Be creative and see what you can come up with.

John: But I always thought Sushi was much better than Szechuan! (although Szechuan would be my second choice!) -Mike Schiller In sunny Fort Lauderdale

John, Sounds like you were at the same DevCon I was. BTW, which way do you prefer your eggroll rolled? Victor A. Wagner, Jr.

Rolled well, of course. There's always someone ready to explain how they roll them in some dive in San Francisco, where all the *real* hackers go. Gag me with ohashi.

Guess I'll never be a *real* hacker; only thing I find less appealing than the idea of eating oriental (especially raw fish), is going all the way to San Francisco to eat oriental raw fish. <sigh> –Eet–

Heck, *I'm* a real hacker and can't stand *any* of the types of food these guys apparently eet. I mean Eat. For me, it's Pizza and Cheese Steaks all the way, except you can't get a decent cheese steak outside the Philly area, so that's always a problem when I go on trips. Pizza, however, is universal. 🙂

Hey, John… can you say, "Snob"? <grin>. Careful, or I'll start telling people what I saw you wearing at SIGGRAPH (hey, who said I could't hyperbolize a bit? 🙂 –Eet–
