What were the results of your tests on the SHOMI dual TBC

They brought it in yesterday and it was….. well dissapointing. At
first glance it passed video and the TBC did fine with a non capstan locked
3/4" machine. It even did OK in shuttle and search modes where some TBCs
just give up. On the signal processing side, though, it's another story.
The gain of the two inputs was 20 Units high and not adjustable while the
chroma could not even come close to 100% without severe distortion. To
make matters worse the distortion was completely different between the two
inputs one pulled red toward magenta the other pulled green toward cyan so
the two inputs could never be made to match one another.
Either this one was very screwed up or it's a bad box.

Sounds like you two know pro video… I picked up some one-inch tape at an
auction recently, Sony V-16SP, 66 mins each, all brand new. Any idea of
what these are worth?

Just out of curiosity — where was the auction? I was at one recently too,
in Mass. We weren't both at the same one, were we?

We pay about $50/hr for 1" premium grade stock, which in Sony is, I
believe V1-K, not sure about V-16SP. D-2 digital stock started out at
about $110/hr almost two years ago but is now down to $63/hr. Isn't it
wonderful when things go down in price? Videotape almost always does.

Sounds like a dog of a unit, Keith. I take it the Shomi TBC doesn't give
you separate controls for each unit? Sounds like there's some kind of
inherent differential phase problem in its design, if one had green going
towards cyan and the other had red going magenta, since these are opposite
directions. Sounds mighty bad to me. –MFW

There are seperate gain and chroma level controls for each input, but,
unfortunatly, the problem is internal to each of the channels. We were
disappointed, even for a low price unit. Again, maybe the thing was just
not adjusted right from the factory, that is, if there are internal setups
for balance and clipping. For now I would caution the buyer to beware of
this TBC except for the most undemanding requirements.
