I'd like for some BIG NAME software house to come up with a word processor
for the Amiga that it would sell like mad to prove to WordPerfect that the
Amiga market was not to blame.
I second that.. A really good, professional word processor that could
accept documents from MAC's, PC's, IBM Midrange (as/400), and many of the
other popular packages.
On screen font scaling, full DTP support, multi format pictures, you know,
the whole nine yards..
Of course, I would settle for someone writting a document conversion
package, that could convert many PC-MAC docs to and from Pro-Write, and
some of the others..
Maybe for christmas??

Getting documents from a S/36 or AS/400 would require
translation from EBCDIC to ASCII (not to mention the hassle
of simply getting the files into an Amiga, since the
S/36-AS400 disk format is foreign even to PC's). You would
need to run a 5250 emulation board on a PC and use a
product like PC-Support/36 (IBM) or ETU (Emerald
Technologies) to get the files from the midrange computer
on to PC disks in ascii format. Kind of a pain!

which is not a big problem.. I currently move documents between PC's
and AS/400 daily. I am just talking about an amiga WP supporting the
AS/400's (IBM's) RFT format for text.. I realize getting someone to
make a 5250 emulation board for the Amiga would be #1 a waste of time
#2 a waste of money #3 not nearly as nice as having a Token Ring NIC
board if you wanted to waste your time and money..
A Token Ring NIC for the Amiga would not be a waste of time. Where I work
we use a Token Ring network and I am trying to get an Amiga in here to do
some multimedia stuff they are talking about doing. It would be nice to be
able to run the netware shells on a token ring board…
If they (CBM) made a TR NIC they would sell about 10..
As it is the netware shell only works for the ARCNET board (according to
CBM)…
I musta missed the beginning of this thread. Which 'netware' is being
discussed.
Novell Netware, the version doesn't really matter…
Ah, well then, maybe I ought to speak up. We're running Novell Netware on
4 Amigas here in the office and NONE of them are on ArcNet, they're all on
C= 2065 Ethernet cards. Of course, we're hooked into a (say it
quietly….) PC server, but that seem like a good thing for a measly 25MHz
'386 to do…try to keep 4 Amigas happy <smmiille>. I guess you must have
been talking to one of the marketing types who doesn't keep track of what's
really happening in the world <sigh>. At any rate, we've been told that
the Novell Netware for the Amiga is going to be released next week (we'd
been told the 15th, but I think releasing on a Sunday is prolly a typo).
Sounds good. What kind of applications are you running on the Amigas?
Yeah, if we get one we will be hooking it to a PC network too. I've always
said the only good use for a PC is running a BBS or being a file server.
The Amiga would make a better file server but since there is no software…
I'm looking forward to the requester, hopefully we can get an Amiga in
here. The guy I talked to could have been from marketing but I'm not sure.

We're primarily developers, so the applications we're running are our
own as well as, of course, the compilers/editors/etc. I'm on the process
of doing a large re-vamping of the server partition layouts and will be
putting all of our source under RCS (my partner is going out of town for a
couple weeks, so this looks like an ideal time (only one of us messing with
the network). As soon as we get some definite answers from some of the
people we've purchased software from in the past about licensing fees for
installing on a network, I suspect we'll be testing some of that software
as well.
Yeah, you might be right, they may only sell 10 but they might also sell
alot more than that. Also how do you say the shell is only for the ARCNET
board, it doesn't matter to the software (or shouldn't matter) what type of
NIC it is using. If they wrote it that it is dependent on the NIC then I'm
very disappointed.
Well, I'll take the guys word for it. But the software annoucment from CBM
says works with the arcnet board. It does not mention the ethernet board,
but I guess that is a C= screwup..
