Bryan,
I have the DAK/Sony external CD ROM drive. Having recently received a disc
that tells me I need the Multimedia Extensions to hear the audio, I would
like to know when DAK will have the upgrade kit available. I understand I
need a sound board and believe that the CD ROM may need to be driven
directly from it. A reference earlier this week to the Soundmaster Pro
board that I followed up left me with the impression that it would only
work with the Panasonic CD Player. I do not believe these systems are brand
specific but it is possible that the drive needs to have a SCSI interface.
As the Sony seems to have a proprietary interface will it therefore need a
special sound board?
Do you have any further info?
Maybe another forum member who is knowledgeable could enlighten me on the
hardware that is actually needed. I consulted my Microsoft Programmers
library CD, but it is still not clear how the audio travels from the disc
and Player to the sound board.

It's too early for me to say how MM will affect our existing hardware.
There still aren't enough MM applications available. Not much to play
with. Lots of different things being discussed, though. A lot depends on
what Windows 3.1 includes in terms of sound support. We're no longer sure,
for example, that there will be separate "multi-media extensions" to
Windows. Once the dust clears we'll get a better handle on it.

I have just subscribed to the IBM version of Nautilus, maybe you should get
DAK to do the same. In the meantime there seems nowhere to get info.
Nautilus refers me to the drive maker or Microsoft. Microsoft don't seem
interested. DAK have not even considered Multimedia yet ( I believe that
was the gist of your reply). Very disheartening for an end user Bryan.
Maybe I should try Sony as their name is on the drive. I'll keep you
informed.
Meanwhile are there no other members in this forum who have any real info
on the requirements for Multimedia CD ROMS.

PC magazine (I think??) just did a comparison of drives which mentioned
that MPC drives should have 64-K buffering and <=500ms access time. OTOH,
they said that some of the drives mentioned didn't meet these specs. and
still seemed to be able to process MPC titles. The toughest area seemed to
be glitches in video retrieval for drives which didn't meet the spec. with
room to spare.
