The Commodore Amiga Amiga UNIX Professional Productivity Promotion
From now through January 31, 1992 Commodore is offering the following UNIX
bundle which includes an A3000UXD, A2410 High Resolution Color Graphics
card and either an A3070 Tape Drive or 1950 Color Monitor for $4998 SRP.
This is the perfect system for the professional user or organization that
has resource intensive applications for either AmigaDOS or UNIX, or both.
The bundle with the A3070 tape drive is the best value for your customers,
and provides 150MB of tape storage to either operating system.
Details of savings, ordering information, and items and conditions are
provided in the enclosed promotion announcement. Commodore will post an
announcement to bulletin boards and networks. A mailing will be sent to
all Amiga Users Groups informing them of this limited time offer. Bundles
are available for immediate shipment. Participating resellers are
encouraged to stock two promotional bundles in order to properly
demonstrate the system, and to avoid allocation requirements.
A UNIX technical support line is available to customers as part of their
Gold Service Plan. The Gold Service number for customers is 800-247-0615.
UNIX Authorized Resellers may also use the UNIX Technical Support Line to
obtain answers to technical questions. Sales related questions should be
directed to your Sales Represenative. Resellers not presently selling
AmigaUNIX products may submit applications for immediate consideration.

Do you know which version of Unix is shipping with this promotion (ie, have
they released 2.01/2 ?)?
Also, does A3000UXD + A2410 = A3000UXG ?

What you see is all I know guy… I wondered that myself. I would guess
UNIX 2.0, but who knows.

It's Version 1.1. According to C='s Chicago office, no real plan to
upgrade to 2.04 (Unix, not WB) decided upon yet. Dealers get a straight
15% margin + 3% CO-OP. Undoubtedly, this is a response to the UnixWorld
Review.

Nope. Ethernet card is in all Amiga Unix machines.

Seems some of the announcements and descriptions overlook the Ethernet
card. I took the pessemistic view that if they didn't mention it, it
wasn't in there – but then I guess compared to the Llowel card its pretty
boring, huh… :^}

It's a shame that people think the Ethernet card is "boring". I don't
know about it under Amiga/UX, but under AmigaDOS running the AS225 TCP-IP
software it's decidedly useful. I have NFS running using the disk on the
HP-UX system at work for Amiga files. 400mb+ (especially if they add more
drives, a real possibility). Plus the ability to run X-windows and
manipulate the Unix file system using the Workbench (within certain
limits).
Oh, and did I mention that, now that I know how, I have access to all the
Laserjets on the network?

Sounds like a nifty set-up. I've been hoping my contracting agncy would
put ina 9600 modem on their little unix/Enet set-up so that I could get
some XWindows practice in from home. But, alas, no dough….

Alas, indeed. Unfortunately, in order to run X-windows from home you
also need Slip, something the AS225 software doesn't provide. Wouldn't it
be nice, though….
Though at 9600 baud, it would still be painfully slow. At the 1200 I'm
capable of I don't think it would be usable. <sigh>

I *think* that the X-Window software for the Amiga now supports SLIP. Best
check with GfxBase to be sure though…

Yeah, thats what I was told too – at 9600 it MIGHT be bearable :^}

I have been doing some X Windows testing with Slip at both 9600 and get
this – 2400 and actually found it to be quite nice. Dale has a great
package there which combined with the autoscroll capability of 2.0 even
gives you a decent shot at a 1024×1024 terminal. At 2400, you have a lot
of time to create the windows, but after it is up, you get acceptable
throughput.
