Font converter

hi there!
i am desperately looking for a font converter to transfer CG fonts into
amiga fonts. the program should do this with a little care so that no
"stairs" on my letters will appear.
if anyone can help, i would be happy to get a mail from you…

When you say "CG" do you mean "Compugraphic"?
yep, "CG" means compugraphic. i have some of them from my professional page
disks, but i could not convince profpage to use full a4 paper size, so i
write letters with documentum, a nice little program, but it has this big
font problem.
this program prints a 35 size amiga font in about 10 pt. size. this means
if i convert my amiga fonts with the font editor i have i get really nasty
stairs in my letters on my laser printer. it looks like 75 dpi and i print
it in 300 dpi…
ok, so i am looking for a good konverter. not only for cg fonts, a good
program to get the normal amiga fonts bigger (without "stairs") would be
also great.
can you help me? if it is shareware i would be happy to get it through
compuserve, if not i need a address of the company to order it…and order
it from germany…
greetings

My CGFonts: volume contains a program called CreateFont that, I believe, is
supposed to do what you want but I haven't been able to get it to work. I'm
not sure if it's part of the v2.1 upgrade or if it was there before.
Anybody used CreateFont successfully?
I use CreateFont all the time, it's great, I have fonts as large as 180. I
then convert them for video through Broadcast Titler 2's Font Enhancer. The
program came with the CompuGraphic font set from Gold Disk. – Joe – via

Joe,
-> I use CreateFont all the time
How does it work? Does it not work for CGTimes & Triumvirate? All I get is
"Error reading data file". And the disk gadget s ghosted for the Font File
gadget.
Malcolm
When you are converting to the Amiga format, the gadget is ghosted because
the program assumes you want the new font to go in your system's font
directory. Just make a font assign to whatever drawer/directory you want
via CLI or Shell before you convert (Assign Fonts: Work:Fonts/Big – for
example). I have a variety of sub-directories in my font drawer for
different applications. Be sure to use a .DAT file as your CG font source
(ex: Triumvirate.dat), and not the .ATC or .LIB ones. I found that some
problems came from one font file that had a variety of sizes, so you may
want to avoid that. I basically name them like Times30.

Thanks, Joe. But I'm still getting the same error. I'll be at GD on Monday
and will get things cleared up then.

Malcom:
I have GOLD DISK's Video Series CG-fonts installed on my hard drive.
After installation I had the same type of problems you have described here
— after contacting Gold-Disk's Tech. Support I learned that their install
srcipt failed to properly name a file called "cg.chardata" on my hard
drive. This file is in my CGfont directory. Gold Disk's install renamed
it to "cg.char" it must be named "cg.chardata". I can now make all the
down-loadable Post-Script fonts I want from the CG-fonts.
This was my problem, it might not be yours I hope you get it fixed soon.

Gary,
Thanks for the tip but I don't have ANYTHING in CGFonts: that starts with
"cg." :/ I'll find out the scoop tomorrow at Gold Disk.
Malcolm
Malcolm
I too use CreateFont .. but you need to have .dat and .chardata files
available in which is contained all the additional info that CreateFont
needs. These files are provided as part of Gold Disk's CG font collections.
For instance, Times.dat contains:
Times.lib
93713
Times-Roman
default2.chardata
Times 0
And you click on the .dat file when selecting the file to be converted. I
spent a long time trying to work out why I kept getting "Error reading data
file" … I realised that, although my PPage had been updated, my CGfonts
had not and I was still using the old version which didn't have .dat or
.chardata files.
Note that you need both files listed in .dat … Times.lib and
default2.chardata … the latter contains character mapping info.
Of course, you could always use 2.0's "Fountain" program … assuming it
works with Gold Disk's version of CG fonts.
Mike (Whapping from the UK)
PS .. sorry if this has already been answered, but I'm a long wau behind
with
my Whapping!
Mike,
I did read the Times.dat file but I don't have the .lib or .chardata files.
It seems a bit odd that CreateFont would be part of PPage but the requisite
files would not. Don't have 2.0 so I won't be able to use Fountain either.
Fortunately, I don't really _need_ this capability at the present time.
Malcolm
Yes Malcolm. I used CreateFont a while ago with success. (Thats the one
that creates the bitmaps, right?) I also used the other util (forget the
name) that converts cg's to PPage Postscritps with no problem except for
the Symbol font, then converted them over to use with excellence. Again,
symbol didn't go and NewOptimal and one or two others wouldn't work with
excellence!. But generally the Gold Disk utilities worked as advertised if
you follow the docs/read.mes, at least they did for me.

Wayne,
-> if you follow the docs/read.mes
That's the thing: I haven't found any. Not in the manual, not on the disk.

Malcolm
Malcolm,
Mine came on the cgfont disk package I got when it first came out.
Perhaps Darlene can get the Read.me's to you legally.

hi malcom,
i found out, that on wb 2.0 there is a program to convert these cg fonts
very comfortable. i ordered my update on wb 2.0 with rom yesturday. wb 2.0
should also improve the display speed, they said.
is it simple to install the rom's? did you anything like that bevore? i am
not so handy with tools 😉
greetings
thomas
Thomas,
My problem has nothing to do with 2.0. And I don't know what's required to
install the ROM. Not something I'm likely to do anytime soon.
Malcolm
Doesn't AmigaDOS 2.0 include a program that can make bitmap fonts from CG
outline fonts? I'm certain it at least adds larger bitmap fonts to the
system font list, making them accessible to older programs. One program
would be any kind of bitmap font editor, which could grab the bitmap and
save it to disk – if the 2.0 program doesn't do this already.
John,
Yes, "Fountain" makes bitmaps from the (at least supplied) CG outline
fonts.
