hello everyone, I know that a cd-rom drive could be a good addition to my
system (386dx33) but… are they expensive or what?? can anyone help me
with some brands that list under $450?? or can you recommend any cd-rom
magazine, publication or book that will keep you informed on this
technology.
help please!!
Hello Edwing!
Dak retail shop in Canoga Park, CA (818) 888-8220 sells NEC-80 internal
drive and scsi controler for $229 (I have bought two and they work fine).
Tiger Software also sells a NEC-72 external drive with 6 or 7 bundled CD's
for $599 their phone no. is: (800) 888-4437. This one is faster than
CD-80. DAk's mail order external drive at $399 with controller is a very
good value too. Their phone is (800) 395-9876. Good Luck!

Farzad,
I have placed an order for one of the $229 NEC-80 drives from DAK's mail
order service (the flood of inquiries has encouraged them to now offer it
as as a catalog item as well as through their stores). I am concerned with
what performance the unit offers, considering its 1 second response time.
Because I'm buying it primarily for my young children, the tiles I'm most
concerned about it playing are: National Geographic Mammals, Mixed-Up
Mother Goose, and an encyclopedia (to be determined). Have you by chance
run any of these on one of your NEC-80's ? I'm especially concerned about
its ability to play the video portions of Mammals at the proper speed.
What specifically can you advise me about its performance? Are there some
things it does well and others that performs less than satisfactorily?
Thanks for any feedback you can give me. My order is back-ordered for the
next week, so I can still cancel it if this unit won't meet the needs I've
described.
Thanks,
Joe Surdoval
