I'm looking for help in solving this problem.
My general trade bookstore (Northern California) is located about
75 feet from my children's bookstore. The trade store uses a CD ROM system
to run "Books In Print" (BIP) all the hours we are open, and the system is
highly useful. The children's store needs access to the same info. I am
licenced and have permission from R. R. Bowker Co. (BIP's owner) to tie
the stores together with a program such as Carbon Copy or Takeover. (Doing
a real network requires more licence fees and more software and would not
be cost-effective.) We are willing, instead, to let the host computer be
"taken over" by the remote computer from time to time.
I need help with these questions: (1) What is the best remote control
program to use for this purpose? (2) Anyone have actual experience
accomplishing this task? (3) Anyone have suggestions where I might look
for more information?

If you're willing to pay for expertise, I'd suggest asking on CONSULT: I
know there are some good consultants from the Bay Area who hang out there
(like me, from time to time, but this is a little outside my specialty).

Ran — what is CONSULT???
I don't have experience with too many of the remote control programs, but I
do use PC-Anywhere to do just what you described. I can access a CD-ROM on
a remote computer without difficulty and I do it several times a week.
Two things:
1. PC-Anywhere doesn't work too well with Windows
2. I purchase PC-Anywhere III and then upgraded to PC-Anywhere IV. While
version IV has more "bells and whistles", it seems to be more complex to
use. I put it back on the shelf and use PC-Anywhere III. It does everything
I want and is simple to use. I believe version III is still being sold and
it's cheaper than version IV.
