More Printer Probs

Hi everyone, it's me again. This time with the REAL problem with the
printer I bought. (Panasonic KX-P1091) I needed a cable for the unit, and
went to my locla Radio Shack to buy one. Plugged the cable in the parallel
slot in the Amiga 500, and the port on the printer. So far so good. Turned
on the system, and my external floppy drive (Supra) would not return ANY
message other than DF1:BAD for ANY disk inserted into it. BUT this happens
ONLY when the printer is plugged in to the parallel port! When Richard so
kindly helped me earlier, I had forgotten I had pulled the plug to use the
second drive. So that caused me to THINK the driver needed to be a
different one when I got the Printer Error messages. Once again my system
is Amiga 500, 1 meg ram, Supra drive external. Might this problem be
related to the cable, do I need an Amiga specific cable for the printer?

Yes, you can't use a PC printer cable on an Amiga. It fits, but you really
need to get one that doesn't have a connection to the power supply line
that's on the Amiga printer port. I don't remember which in it is (14?)
but I think you can clip it with a needle-nose pliers on the cable. Don't
use that cable! It might damage the printer or the Amiga or both. I had a
1091 for a long time, they work fine. I had a special cable that came with
the printer when I bought it four-five years ago.

will check the cable connector pins and see if eliminating that one cures
the problem. I really appreciate the help!

John, any chance you would know where to get such a cable? I clipped the
pin on this cable which corresponds to the power supply line (It is 14) and
still got the same result. This kind of thing really upsets me, I wish once
in a while I could hook something up and it would work right the first
time. (sigh)

I'd forgotten about that power line on the parallel port… it doesn't
interfere with the use of any of my printers (Sharp JX9500 & NEC CP6), but
I had to cut it on the ribbon cable connector to get my scanner to work.

John, thanks again. I modified the cable using the references for pin
assignments in both my Amiga manual and the printer manual. Have the unit
working fine now, again, many thanks!
