Help!!
I had a spur of the moment "great idea" when I ran across a good price on 3
1/2 inch floppy drives. Only thing is, their 1.44mb drives, made by
Samsung (model SFD-321D). My 2000's DF0: died, and I'm looking to replace
it. Does anyone know if the Samsung 1.44mb drive can be made to work?
It has two sets of jumpers on it labeled like this: DS0 DS1

o o o
DC1 RDY
I tried a total of 14 different combination of settings, and the best I got
was a partially working format of a blank disk, and it couldn't read a
formatted disk.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

P.S. I can return the drives, so if you know where I can get a good price
on drives that will work on an Amiga, I'll take that too!
I think you'd best return the drive. Commodore tech reps told me
the other day that the Amigas need a special half-speed drive to
read/write the 1.44-Meg format. (I think it has something to do with
the speed that the drive interface circuitry can read data from the
drive.)

No prob. I had the same idea a while back. When I asked my local
tech/info person about it, he told me what I told you.
At the WOCA Show this last week-end in Toronto, I asked a Commodore rep
about getting one of *their* HD drives as a replacement part for my own
drives. He told me that there weren't enough of them to go around, and
they'd be used primarily in new machines. They'd be available as parts no
earlier than two years from now.
Disappointing, no?
I had heard several people on the nets talking about both WB2.1 and
HD floppies being available now at their local dealers. I was really
hoping to be able to pick up one of these 🙁
They ARE available, if not through your local dealer.
Check out some Mail order Amiga places.
(It's where I got MY HD floppy drive . . . )

So was I. (^_-) But perhaps they *are* available where you are…. the
problem might be that the *Canadian* branch doesn't have (and won't have)
them for some time – other than in the 4000's and 1200's.
HD floppy drives can be easily had….

50,000? (^_^) I could probably do a booming business upgrading drives
for people.
Seriously, though – I understand that the current HD drives won't fit
in my 500's case. In that case, I'll hold off until I build my computer
into a different case.

It won't work in 1.44 mode and apparently isn't working too
well in the Amiga's native mode of 880K. You want it jumpered as DS0
which should be the left two pins on the row like this:
DS0 DS1
0—–0 0
0 0 0
DC1 RDY
If that doesn't do it, I'd return it.
Thanks Don, That was one of the combinations I tried. Resulting in not
being able to read a formatted disk, and reaching the end of a format and
getting a response about not being able to intitalize the disk. But at
least the drive light came on :). >>Steve.
Their is more to making the drive work then playing with the DSX jumpers
the ready and disk change lines are different then the IBM.
