According to the manual:
"If location D0000H is not available in your computer, the suggested
address is A0000H. If this address is not available, see the following
possibilities:"
Then it goes on to list addresses 8000H, 9000H, A0000H, B0000H, C0000H,
D0000H, E0000H, and F0000H as possible memory segments, along with why they
might _not_ work. It says Iluminit will warn you if E0000H conflicts with
BIOS ROM or transient data — is this what happens?
My reccomendation is to use the board in the illuminator mode with two 32k
buffers at the D0000H address. Even though you say it is impossible to do
on your machine, this is the way I've seen it work best most often, and
maybe a re-evaluation of priorities will bring you to try this
configuration.
I use the ADI's supplied by Matrox with much success. Also, the Windows 3.1
drivers and frame-grab software allows me to be extremely productive with
the board in Windows, as well as offering near true-color (depending on the
software dithering method, it can be almost as good as 24-bit!) 640×480
non-interlaced display.
As Gary often says, hardware conflicts are the worst! Somtimes one has to
make choices based on their personal priorities. Maybe QEMM could save the
day again by excluding and moving memory segments….

Well, the problem is that ILUMINIT does not even bring up E0000H as
an option. I even explicitly EXCLUDE E000-EFFF in QEMM in config.sys and
still it ILUMINIT doesn't seem to give me that area. I checked Manifest
and it reports that everything from D000-EFFF is unused so it's not as if
there's something sitting in that region right?
I know having it with two 32K buffers at D000 is the best way to go
but trust me, I'd love to make it that simple, but that would mean pulling
out my ethernet card every time I want to render something to the frame
buffer! The ethernet card config program doesn't let me into the E000's
either. Why?? Isn't it a valid area for use?
One final question, can you check YOUR ILUMINIT.EXE program and see
if it allows you to select E000 as a frame buffer address? Maybe my
ILUMINIT is older and doesn't for some reason. I can't think of any other
reason why it won't let me use it..??

My iluminit (Version 1.6.0.3;Iluminator BIOS 1.6.0.0) too, does not give me
the E0000 segment as a choice. Only A0000 or D0000. Although I've been able
to tiptoe around a few of these problems, I certainly don't consider myself
a hardware _expert_! I could't find reference to the iluminator address
with manifest _or_ Norton SI…Evidently that E segment is just- well-
used! Any hardware types out there have an idea that might help Steven?? In
the meantime, you could try Bruno Parent at Matrox (semms like a nice
enough guy…) 1.800.462.8769.
