I need some advice on setting up a CD ROM server for my Novell Netware 3.11 network. I have been reading a lot on SCSI Express and need some comparisons/recommendations re Optinet. Our server is a Systempro with 32 Megs. We would prefer an NLM solution. Any comments welcome Angus

Angus, SCSI Express is the only Novell Certified CD-ROM subsystem that allows the CD-ROM(s) to appear as standard NetWare mountable volumes. For a good review on performance and the CD-ROM network solutions available reference the December 31, 1991 issue of PC Magazine. If you would like more information please contact our sales department at 407-677-8333. Best Regards, Arnold Jones Micro Design

Arnold, This might sound like a silly question, but is it possible to mount a CD-ROM as a Novell drive under Netware 2.2? Martin

Online also offers a NetWare 2.X solution: the OPTI-NET VAP. This solution emulates a standalone CD-ROM workstation in the same manner as the OPTI-NET for DOS and OPTI-NET NLM products. Chris

Chris, Thanks for the information. When I am ready I will ask for more details. Martin

I can't offer any unbiased comparisons; but if you have any questions concerning SCSI Express – send them my way. Jim Duke Micro Design International

Angus, SCSI Express seems to be one of the most popular, but I have never install one so I am afraid I can't give you my personal experience. I know that Novell's next release (NetWare 4.0) will have CD Rom support built-in. But of course that won't help you now. I would think that you can't go wrong with SCSI Express or Optinet. Lee

Angus: There is a review on the OPTI-NET NLM in a fairly recent issue of PC Week; I don;t have the exact date. Try a Computer Select database query if you have it available. A few details on OPTI-NET: You can support up to 100 networked CD-ROM users without using a single connection on your file server. OPTI-NET offers complete emulation of a standalone CD-ROM workstation and includes a licensed copy of the Microsoft Extensions for each user. A feature to enforce concurrent-use networked CD-ROM licenses is built into the product. Extensive monitoring, control, and configuration capabilities are available from full-screen, menu-driven console. Context sensitive help is available at all times.
