Just installed a Mitsumi 5S. When I go into Windows two files are loaded into memory which leaves me only 508K to run applications (not enough for Ozcis, for example). They are MTMCDE.SYS which is 20,784KB; and there is MSCDEX.EXE, which is another 36,208KB. How can I handle this? Can both be loaded into high memory? If so, how?

I have a Mitsumi internal as well, and was hoping you could let me know if there is any information or product support on the darn thing! It came in a blue box and the name mitsumi only appears once on the box, and almost no info in the manual. I just got a soundblaster, and it aint working yet.

I have a Mitsumi I purchased from Software Etc. It came with very little documentation and no warranty card. I called Mitsumi and they said they don't register their products. I find this odd, but what can I say. The number is at work so I don't have it to give to you right now. I too have a SoundBlaster board and it does not play audio CD's directly from the Mitsumi drive. It is not supported. I believe the only one currently supported is ATI's sound board. I do, however, get sound from the sound board when playing MPC CD's via Windows. CD's like Cinemania and Grandma and Me play fine via the soundblaster board. When I get to work on Monday, time permitting, I'll post the phone number for Mitsumi Electric. Good luck.

John… Yes, I got a small manual with mine from Groupware. It's about 25 pages or so. Don't know where you got yours, but Ishmail (on this forum at Groupware) would probably help. I also have a soundblaster. I thought, at first, it wasn't working, but I just goofed. It is. Also, I just looked in the manual to see if there were any addresses or phone nrs for you. Believe it or not! Not one! Matter of fact, not even the name Mitsumi in the entire manual! Weird. But it does seem to be a fine drive. I have no other drive to compare it, but I'm perfectly happy with it. They do seem a little flaky, as in not admitting who they are, though. Just looked on the front of the drive itself: No Mitsumi name there either! Again: weird. bp

Gee as a company whose biggest clients are like myself OEM's I don't find that weird at all. Does your disk drive have a name on the front of it? Frank Harris Computron, Ltd.

Bob, This is more of a question than an answer. Do you have any expanded memory available? I ask because OZCIS is very well behaved. On my system it uses only 4.1 K of conventional memory, and 2 meg expanded under DOS or WINDOWS. John

John… I confessed some ignorance to John Small in another msg here about my expanded memory. I told him I assumed I have only 64k *expanded*, as opposed to *extended* memory available… And that I was apparently using all 64k of that up with Stacker and DOS5. When you say "2 meg expanded" on your system, are you referringto expanded, or extended? bp

Check to see where your EMS is located … assuming you're using it. See if you can get rid of it … that will get you 64k back. Otherwise, make sure the page frame is (re)located to E000-EFFF, like this … EMM386.EXE RAM FRAME=E000 (let Win31 provide the EMS as needed) or EMM386.EXE 1000 RAM FRAME=E000 (if you need 1mb of EMS for DOS) Then you can load one or both of the cdrom files high. Hope this helps. -jts

John… I'm fairly ignorant on the subject of EMS. Here's where I am: I assume only 64k of EMS (Expanded) is avail. I'm using expanded memory for DOS 5 (not sure how much DOS uses of EMS), and for Stacker. Stacker uses some 20k+ I believe. So that about uses it all up???

You can have lots of EMS … that 64k is just the page frame that DOS looks through to access whatever you have set up … many mb if needed. And if you load Stacker with the /EMS switch it will put most of it there. Forget the 64k page frame per se. Just make sure it's located from E000-EFFF, that way you can have everything *up to that boundry* potentially available as high ram except for the video section and an occasional rom. -jts
