Hi there… I'm a newcomer to CIS…
As ASDG is there, would anyone tell me PhotoCD loaders are on their way
for AdPro ? I would prefer it to PhotoShop on the PeeCees 😉

Unfortunately the cost of liscensing PhotoCD is incredibly high (around 100K).
Support for PhotoCD would be nice but right now it just costs too much.

I can easily understand that, but wouldn't it be possible to do some kind
of reverse engineering, and not using the word PhotoCD… The whole Amiga
community would thank ASDG, and sales would ride high…

There's supposed to be a Shareware or PD PhotoCD viewer around, if it
allows multitasking you could always use Adpro's screensaver Loader and
grab it into Adpro and Exports in whatever form you wish.
Yup, this could be possible, but the PD PhotoCD viewers don't support the
three largest resolutions (because of bugs & memory problems).

It's too bad that Kodak isn't taking the approach that CBS took way back when
it developed the 33 1/2 RPM LP record. CBS licensed the technology to other
manufacturers for $1/year! Kodak should be doing everything they can to make
the PhotoCD format readable by anyone and everyone. At Kodak's scale, a $15K
license fee is peanuts for their corporation. They will make much more money
if they can get EVERYONE using PhotoCD's. It's the prospect of millions of
consumers eventually using them which offers them real earnings potential.
It's especially silly given the prominence of the Amiga as multimedia platform.
Once again it looks like short term bean-counting winning out over long term
intelligent planning.

as told on Usenet, a PhotoCD license does not cost $100000. It costs
~$15000. There are two PhotoCD readers available for the Amiga that do
have a license. One for consoles (Eureka?) and one for computers
(PhotoWorX!). I personaly own PhotoWorX and I can highly recommend it to
anyone with PhotoCDs. It's a really nice piece of software and I can't
wait for the second version with more features for the supplied Retina
output module.
I agree with you, still $15000 is much to high when looking at the license
costs and support for PC/Mac developers ($500-600). This is a real
rip-off!

saved me lot's of work to reply… boy, the rrp of $199 is really high, so
I would recommend users to look at mail orders, wich should get a better
price from Spectronics for their customers – otherwise I think you better
buy from Germany. Last time I saw it here in Germany for $91.
Anyway, the software is really worth $100 (well… I don't think $199, if
I look at other programs for that price) and with a gfx board you can get
a 768*512*24 image displayed in ~4 seconds wich is extremly fast compared
to Mac's and PCs with 486/66.
