#Imagine 3.0 feature
6 messages in this thread
Mike,
I've got a suggestion for a new feature to add to Imagine 3.0. You know
how you can put a comment on a file? How about adding the feature where
Imagine writes a comment with the program name, version number, and render
time when it writes the image to disk?
eg: "Imagine 3.0 Render time: 00:12:45"
I don't just want to see this feature on Imagine, I want to see this on
EVERY 3d program. This would give people a good way to compare the various
programs on the market.
Anybody else want to see this feature? Ask (beg) the author of your
favorite 3D software.
Jeff,
Might be a good idea but I am not sure what good it would be. In terms
of time and so forth that info is in the project editor after an image has been
made. In the other cases of the file name itself having this info, to some
degree it does, on the PC there is a date and time stamp, I dont know about the
Amiga. However it is somewhat important to keep files names a small as
possible.
If you want us to tag a txt file in the header of an image, we could do
that but it would require a bit of a rewrite to do it. It seems that this kind
of change would break the work that others do for third party products like
essence. We realize the value of these products and we would like to quit
adding things to the file format so that the other vendors could settle on
thier prodct line.

Mike,
I wasn't thinking of attaching a text file to the image. As you probably
know, the Amiga's operating system has the ability to add a comment to any
file. If I remember correctly this comment can be up to 255 characters
long. (although 80 would be enough) These comments can be used for a lot
of usefull functions. Ncomm writes a comment on all downloaded files
telling you what system you got it from, while Autopilot writes the short
description from the catalog on it's downloads.
By their nature comments cannot add more than 255 bytes to a file and
since they've been part of the operating system since 1.2 they won't break
any 3rd party programs. They also don't make for a large file name since
they're completly seperate from the normal name and datestamp of the file.
You don't see the comment unless you type 'list' rather than 'dir'.
As for what good thay'd be for Imagine. The first question everyone thinks
of when the see a 3D rendering is "How long did it take?" This would
provide an easy way to tell. You don't have to load Imagine to check on
render time, or even own Imagine. The information is part of the image
file and you can read it just by typeing 'list' from a CLI.
Granted, a long render time on a full trace image may give people the
impression that the program is a bit slow, but there will also be a lot of
skilled users that will be able to get incredible results with short
render times. That would make Imagine look pretty good compared to the
competition. :^)
The one downside is that you could ONLY add this feature to the Amiga
version since the comments are an AmigaDos feature and MessyDos doesn't
have anything similar.
If you'd like more information about comments, any good AmigaDos book
should be able to explain it much better than I can.
Mike,
I'm having problems loading some of the primitives. Is it just me or a
bug?

Donald,
Like what… be specific please 8/.
Mike
Mike,
Sorry it took so long to get back. Been busy. When I add any primitive but
a plane in the detail editor the system crashes, error 8000000B.
