Is it possible to use an internal modem with the amiga? If I place an IBM
internal modem into the IBM slots, can it be used on the amiga? If so, what do
I need to do?
Yes, and no. The Amiga can not use the cards in the IBM slots unless the
slots are 'bridged' to the Amiga bus _and_ you have software drivers to
handle the board. There's only one product I've heard about that bridges
the slots (called goldengate) but I've never seen it or heard of anyone
who has, and I don't know of any drivers available to handle the
cross-over. Even installing an BridgBoard to allow PC emulation under
AmigaDos will not give the Amiga side access to the IBM cards.

Well, of course there is the Supra 2400zi internal modem for the Amiga, but by
today's standards 2400 baud is old stuff (but it is what I use). My Supra
2400zi works fine and doesn't use my serial port up.

If you buy an Amiga specific internal modem…yes. If you wish to use
an internal modem designed for an MS-DOS based machine, no the Amiga can't use
it. A BridgeBoard could use it…but I don't think that's what you're looking
for.

Thanks for the info. I suppose that I'd be better off getting an external modem
that could be used by PC/MAC/Amiga sides of the computer.
I asked because I have an internal 9600 and an external 2400. It would be nice
if the amiga could use the pc slot modem. Oh well, no big deal.

Yes…you'd be better off getting an external, they are more "portable"
so to speak. 14400 bps modems can be found for under $200 now so depending on
your budget, it might not be that big a deal to upgrade.
