#Which CD-ROM
7 messages in this thread
I am looking at getting a CD-ROM drive. I am wondering what is the
story with the double speed units, do I need on for my Amiga? – What specs
are going to assure the maximun compatability with my Amiga and available
software. I am looking to go as inexpensive as possible. I will mount it
external in my own box on my A3000.
After going to Fry's Electronics to look at the Texel $149 special I got
really confused seeing all the other models and specs.
Thanks

Scott,
Unless you feel you are going to get into Multi-Session Photo-CD's, get
the Texel. Heck, for $149 how far can you go wrong…

Well, I'd be check the ROM version on the drive, some older Texel drives
just DID NOT LIKE co-existing with hard drives. Specifically v1.04-1.08.
V. 1.09 will usually work, and 1.1 is supposed to be their "Latest and
greatest."
I Had the DM-5024 (External) running for 6 months on my 3000. And it seems
to work fine on my Brand New 4000 courtest of a GVP 4008 Controller.

Brian,
I believe the "co-existing problem" you mention with hard drives is the
fault of the Amiga's Western Digital SCSI chip. If you replace it with
the current revision '-08' these problems seem to go away.
On one of my 3000's I have running two Maxtors, a Quantum and two NEC
Intersect CD-Rom drives. With the -04 proto IC, this 3000 came with, I
had problems with lock-ups. I have never had a problem since I upgraded
this chip.
Just something to keep in mind..

Ah, but when pressed, Texel will admit that their drives, before ROM
version 1.09, would lock up when unsed in "multi-tasking" environments
like OS/2. _Especially_ if the drive wasn't the only thing on the SCSI
Bus.

Brian
Brian,
Did Texel make any mention that they would send new ROM's to replace the
1.09's if requested?

Basically, just call (with a visa or MC handy) and order it…
