RTf 12/20 1354 Commodore Intl <CBU.N> to introduce game console
WEST CHESTER, Pa., Dec 20 (Reuter) – Commodore International Ltd said it
plans to introduce its Amiga CD32 game console in the U.S. from January 6 to 9
at a consumer electronics show in Las Vegas.
The company said the Amiga CD32 goes on sale in the U.S. in late February
or early March, with some 85 game titles available.
The company did not say how much the console would cost.
CD32 costs around #279 (UK pounds), so I guess it will be around $500…
Sales are _very_ encouraging in Europe…

this sounds expensive. In Germany we pay less than 600 DM, that is around
$330!

I just saw my first CD32 at a local dealer in Vancouver, B.C. It was
selling for $500 cdn, I'm not sure what the exchange rate is these days
but I'd estimate that's $375 US.
Nice compact unit.
I read in Amiga Format Microbotics has an expansion board with a serial
and parallel port, a floppy drive port, support for an IDE drive, RAM
expansion and a port for the MPEG unit just about ready for release.
Alas no monitor port!

I asked MicroBotics about that and they replied with some very non-specific
terms. e.g We're working on a lot of things and the CD32 is only one of our
markets..
So, that sounds intresting!!

I work at a dealer in Orlando, FL. We have 10 units in stock (had — got them
in on Dec. 23 and sold 5 on Dec. 24) and they are $399.95. Price in January
will be slightly less ($349.95 – $379.99) with games between $29 and $49.

P.S. — The unit ships with Pinball Fantasies and Sleepwalker on one CD. Nice
titles — they really look good.

Took me a while to figure out how to make the 4000 run it, though… sure
doesn't like ANYTHING to be "non-vanilla". I have to double finger boot
the machine, select PAL, then boot with no startup sequence. Runs fine,
then.
I like the Party Land and Stones and Bones tables the best. How about
you?

I like Speed Demons (Devils?) myself. BTW, Thanks for the
startup-tips. I think the AGA version is PAL or something and needs some
special tricks. Degrader is a good utility for most non-aga folks.
Off the subject, I really love the Process-Print option in Image-
Master. Best Preferences printer driver I have ever seen! I've a Tektronixs
4693DX (Been "supported" since WB 1.1) and I paid $4500 or so for it about 3
years ago. Too date, all we've been able to get out of it is screen dumps. I
tried Art Department Professional; I tried Image F/X, I tried Deluxe Paint, I
tried, &c. Then, I tried Image Master. Hot Dog! Awesome quality output.
You've heard of this new Primera Wax Transfer Printer? Well, my (granted
$4500) Tektronix with Image Master's Process- Print kicks it's butt! (Now, I'm
not counting their Dye-Sublimation mode, it is Awesome) Anyway, thanks for the
great program, and the hot new retail price for Image Master!

ps. Ben, I don't know if you have been wathing the "non-linear" market, but
DMI know has their "Digital Broadcaster 32" out. What I wonder is why they
don't contract with you to provide a "link" to their data whereby the user can
create "transitions" from one set of frames to another. Digitally. They are at
"cuts" only know. All they need is a tool like Image Master to get them into
"awesome". 😉

Let me know when "The legend of Zelda – A link to the past" is available
for the CD32. When that happens, I will buy one! Almost bought a SNES
last year to play that game.

Hi all,
Here in New Zealand the CD32 is selling for NZD 899 at CMB dealers and in
a electronics chain store called Dick Smith's. It has been on sale for
about two months now. CBM had a short TV ad campaign in early December
during prime family time on Sunday night.

In AmigaWorld, a Canadian company called Computer Answers is selling
NTSC CD32's into the American market for $348 (US).

BTW, just read my son's new EGM (Electronic Games Monthly) just had a
rating of all of the gameing units out there. They rated CD32 just behind
SuperNES overall, with some good comments. Whupped 3DO and such all over
the place. Neat!

KHQ-TV Channel 6 in Spokane, Wa. had a short story about CBM's CD32 on
their evening news a few days ago. They reported that even though CD32 was
not available in the US yet, it was taking Europe by storm. Also had a
interview with Jeff Potter (not sure of the name) of CBM. So even though
CD32 is not a household name yet, it's beginning to make the news.

The price in Australia is $699-00 so I guess that US$500 sounds pretty
close.
There was a lot of confusion over the price before it was released with
the Commodore PR company saying the price would be $599. I was rather
annoyed to see the price put a $100 higher which makes it just that much
harder to justify to my wife.
