Jerry, New question. I have noticed that the scrolling speed is adjustable. However, the difference between the first notch and the second notch is tremendous. The rest of the fast speeds seem to be closer together. Is there anyway of getting something between the first and second notch. IOW, notch one is too slow and notch two is too fast. What do you do if you need something in between? You can tell that I am finally finding out how to use my new toy. Fred

Fred, You're exactly right: Speed #1 is too slow, and Speed #2 is too fast. Nothing that can be done about it, to the best of my knowledge, though, except to get Montage, which has very selectable scrolling speeds, and fonts that make even the new CG's font edges look like jagged broken glass. Its only hindrance right now is the lack of support for PostScript fonts, but the PS module is supposed to be shipping very shortly. I highly recommend it to anyone who uses the CG regularly. Jerry

Jerry, I read a review about Montage. It sounds good. How does it work with the Toaster? Do you run it from the Toaster, or do you have to exit and run by itself? I need to find the time to read more about the Amiga operation. I was never a Windows fan and had no real need for multi-tasking. But, with the Toaster, I see where this feature can be very handy. BTW, how do you get back to a program once you have left it. For example, I was in the Toaster. Needed to go to Ad Pro, so I pressed CTRL, CTRL, ALT, ALT and ended up in the main Amiga screen. Pressed the correct icons to start Ad Pro. Then instead of exiting Ad Pro, I pressed the CTRL, CTRL, ALT, ALT and that put me back into the Toaster. So far so good. Then I needed to get back into Ad Pro. How do I get there. Pressing the CTRL combination only got me to the "Workbench Screen". When I tried pressing the Ad Pro icon I got a message saying that the program was already running. Pressing the CTRL combination sent me back to the Toaster. I know it has to be something like Windows where you press the TAB or ESC key to move from one program to the next, but which key? Fred

Fred, To go from the Toaster Switcher screen to Workbench: CTRL-CTRL-ALT-ALT To go from anywhere else back to the Switcher screen: CTRL-CTRL-ALT-ALT To go from other programs (including Lightwave) to the Workbench: L-AMIGAKEY-N To go back into those other programs: L-AMIGAKEY-M Tinker with this. You can also use the L-AMIGAKEY-N combination to go to the Workbench, then start another program, then swap among them with the L-AMIGAKEY-M combo. On the Montage question, it still has a few bugs, and it's very slow. It causes crashes from time to time, it hogs hard drive space and memory, and when it runs out of memory, its main annoyance is the fact that it doesn't tell you there's a problem, it just ceases to function properly as far as saving pages, sequences, and such are concerned. With all that said, I wouldn't take anything for it. The pages are gorgeous. Good luck, Jerry

Jerry, I'll try out that L-AMIGAKEY-N and M combo this weekend. I am taking a day off after completing the editing of two weddings and one video scrap book. About 42 hours of straight editing. My brain just shut down. (Although that probably happened years ago and I'm just running on impulse power) (g) Well, I thought I would take the day off. My wife just called out to me to remind me that we have to hang pictures. We bought a new home this past September. With all of the work at the office, I have not taken off a weekend till now. And there are about 300 boxes out in the garage that need unpacking. Also a stack of pictures to be hung. No rest for the wicked. Does Montage work as a stand alone program. For instance, when you create and render a screen in CG, you can load it through the switcher. Can the same be done with Montage? Fred

Fred, All Montage pages render out automatically as framestores whenever you render them (within Montage) to the screen. Of course, accessing these framestore pages is simple from the switcher; no different than accessing any other framestore. You cannot, however, access Montage's key pages or roll pages from the switcher. They make up for this by letting you program the transitions and times for all the pages of a Montage sequence if you want to; you just go into Montage, play sequence, and all the pages play back for the proper durations, and you can specify any of the Toaster's transitions to be used when going from page to page. Thus far, I'm using it just for framestore pages, since I do all my editing with the Editizer. To answer the rest of the question, no, you don't have to leave the Toaster program in order to run Montage. The program, when running, puts a little Montage button on the switcher screen right beside the t-bar. Jerry

Jerry, Thats the answer I was looking for. Thanks. BTW, the commands you gave me about switching between programs worked just like you said. I have a small stack of printouts of messages from you and others sitting right next to my Toaster. I reach for them a lot quicker than I do the manual. What price range is Montage in? I may consider it. Fred

Fred, Glad the answers helped out. Montage sells for around $300, which includes 10 fonts. An extra packet of 10 more fonts is about $100, and the 'soon-to-be-shipping' PostScript font converter is supposed sell for about $100. Jerry

I saw you were looking for a review of Montage. I haven't used it, but I just got the lateset Video Toaster User magazine and there is a comparison of Montage and ToasterCG on pg. 73 (Jan. '94)

Jim, Thanks for the info. When did you get the Jan issue? Do you live on the west coast? I subscribed several months ago and was told that my subscription would start with the Jan. issue. Glad to know that it is out. Probably working its way thorough the holiday mail. Fred

I haven't gotten the Jan. issue in the mail yet, either. I just happened to be in a magazine store in Hollywood on Thursday and saw a bunch of them and figured I'd get one anyway. BTW, there's also another review of Montage in the Aug/Sept 1993 issue of Video Toaster User.

Jim, I think I read that review. What I was trying to determine is how Montage works with the Toaster. Exit one program and go into the other or bring the titles into the Toaster via the switcher. Fred
