#What is iges???

I need a quick education on iges. Is this a mesh file format or what??
Please give me as much information on this subject as possible or suggest where
I can look to find info.

You are in the ASOFT multimedia forum. IGES is a AutoCAD conversion utility it
stands for Initial Graphics Exchange Specification. You need to GO ACAD to talk
to the AutoCAD people.

I know where I am. I was told this format had something to do with 3D work and
I'm curious to know if and how it might apply to 3D Studio. Can you give me any
other info before I go to the Autocad forum?

To my knowledge, 3D Studio does not read in IGES files but there are many
translators out there that both input and output IGES. I think it is more than
just an AutoCAD conversion utility. It has been around for a long time and was
not created by Autodesk. AutoCAD does do a decent job of using it. There is
also an official Autodesk IGES (utility, toolkit, conversion program, whatever,
I am not sure what they call it) product that can be purchased separately I
believe… The latest version was much improved from the earlier ones.
IGES is a tricky devil and didn't go 3D until later in life as I understand it.
Everyone seems to have there own version too and many are incompatible with
supposedly IGES compatible software and translators. At least that has been my
experience. Others are more informed than I am sure. Such as the translator
folks who frequent here and will probably let you know much more. My opinion is
to stay away from it if possible. Often it seems to end up the only choice

Thanks for taking the time to answer. I was lead to believe that Iges was used
as an output for some laser type modelers. I looked in the Acad forum and
there was lots of references to Iges, but no real explanation of what it is,
how it is generated, or how it is used. Anyway… Thanks again.
