Does anyone happen to know where I could get a personal copy of the Anuimated
Trilogy "Heavy Metal" featuring the Rock Group of the same name??
I know it is not commercially available because of "court action" I also know
the details surrounding the action…however one persons being responsible for
holding up the release of this dated classic shouldn't keep this classic from
circulation..well it has…unfortunatly.
That's why I'm looking for a "personal" copy.
I know if anyone has this I would be interested in obtaining it from them if
the terms are reasonable.
I was talking about the 3rd story to an animator freind of mine and we'd be
interested in going over the storyline and viewing this classic piece if
possible.
Anyone???

Are you referring to the Columbia Pictures release "Heavy Metal" that was
directed by Gerald Patterson and produced by Ivan Reitman? It sounds like
you are but you have alot of things out of wack. First there isn't "A" rock
group, there is a phenomenal soundtrack including: Black Sabbath, Cheap
Trick, Blue Oyster Cult, Devo, Donald Fagan, Don Felder, Grand Funk
Railroad, Nazareth, Sammy Hagar, Stevie Nicks, Journey, Riggs and Trust.
You can find the soundtrack on Full Moon Asylum Records.
Secondly it isn't a Trilogy, it's a compilation of 7 stories from the pages
of the long running magazine "Heavy Metal".
The stories are:
"Soft Landing" – Dan O'Bannon
"Grimaldi" – Harold Whitaker
"Harry Canyon" – Dan Goldberg & Len Blum
"Den" – Richard Corben
"Captain Sternn" – Berni Wrightson
"B-17" – Dan O'Bannon
"So Beautiful So Dangerous" – Angus McKie
"Taarna" – Dan Goldberg & Len Blum

Actually there are a number of longstanding court actions involved in this
film, and considering how long it's been tied up, it probably will continue
to be.

Well I actually know where an original cut resides. I happen to know one of
the parties who was involved with the film. He was one of my "mentors" when

I was very young. Assuming we're talking about the same movie, which sounds
highly possible, tell me a little more about which story you're talking
about, i.e. – what happens in it, and I'll be glad to see what I can do.

I thought I remembered 3 stories..at least at the time it seemed like
3..he..he..the ol' days..don't-ja-Know! <GB>
Like Tiny Dr. Tim Say's…."If Ya' Remember the 60's….You weren't really

OH' Well..Another Day…Another Green/Blue, Electric-Yellow Dollar!
The first one started out with the B17 Bomber flying along then a Sphere from
outer space crashes through the rear of the plane.
Now that I think about it it was more than 3 stories…..
Anyway this Green Sphere lands in a wasted future version of New York
City…..Guy in the Cab…Ray Gun…Disolves Ya-Da-YaDa.
The last one was the Amazon Woman on the Bird Thingy Remember that!!
Anyway I'd really like to get a good copy of this for personal use only.
I had a copy of this that I picked up off of one of the Satcom Satellite
Transmisions back in the early 80's but it was stolen.
I was totally bummed.
If you've got a way I can get a look at this It would be wonderful!! <BG>

I've got a copy of "Heavy Metal", but it's already 2nd or 3rd generation vhs,
so Paul should be able to do a better job. Plus, my second vcr is out of action
until further notice.
Great movie though. I always wondered why animated sex is almost better than
watching real people on film. Anyone know? Am I weird? Well, I already know the
answer to that <g>.

First let me thank you for the red.mli…I think I know what's going on
now…I've got Gamma set at 2.2 and the Two spotlights I'm useing are set at
113 L. That washes the heck out of the red's.
sooooooo…There I go! <g>
It comes out pink no matter what the heck I do……

What were some of your other settings?
Did you scale the geometry up or down before or after creating your
lights…..?
I thought I was pretty much at default but upon checking I did zoom out a
couple of times before creating the logo in the shaper.
The units are 1in increments but setup for Decimel however I don't think that's
any problem.
I can't beleive how light and Pink your material looks with my current
settings…
Somethings really out of Wack.?????

that alarm project is so far in the past, I don't know what I did. It's over 2
years since I completed it and it was probably an r2 rendering – pre-gamma
correction. My suggestion is to mix some more blue in the diffuse colour and
make the ambient almost black.
But be aware that composite NTSC hates reds generally and you should avoid them
where possible. It may be impossible to get extremely good results. If you can
show the animation at component (betacam level) all the better for the reds.

Prior to your sending me the red.mli file I ended up using some extreemly dark
colors and lighting changes.
I hope this works out because when I compared settings this is as dark a red as
I'm able to get.
Being able to see your settings was a great sanity check <BG>
I was thinking that there was something wrong with my setup.
This is the first time I've ever had trouble with a "colour". <g>
I'll go in and try what you said on the red.mli, I'm sure it'll look
great.

I know someone mentioned gamma before… I was trying to use a high gamma
setting once (2.2?), but I was losing all subtlety with my ambient colours.
It was an outer space thing, and the dark side of a moon was pitch black at
ambient 0,0,0; but at L=1 it was too bright! I had to bring the gamma down to
get the right effect. Maybe you should lower gamma? (No gamma arguments,
please!)
My dealer just isn't gettin' it done again… I may be calling you Mon.

Seriously though Since I was going out to Video with a setting of 1.8 in the
past I thought that going to the 2.2 Gamma recommended by some on the forum, I
might solve my problem.
All I ended up doing was turning down my spotlight settings to achieve the same
effect…..

Well, OK…. "1.8 is the only true gamma! Follow 1.8! It is the light
and the way! All other gammas are but false prophets. G.P. makes a thousand
dollars every time someone uses 2.2!!!" <G,D,R,and HBTD> (Hiding Behind The

Still have your quote. I zipped it up, and it is now 1/3 less! <g> Have
your # too. The contact dude at DPS (Brad) is *supposedly* really slow about
getting my dealer authorized. Luckily all my jobs are on hold right now…
