#Soccer Ball – Help!

Hi everyone, I am trying to get the black and white pattern of a soccer ball
to map to the surface of a sphere, but I can't seem to get it to happen without
the map getting skewed and deformed. I have tried all types of mapping
coordinates including having the lofter apply them. Nothing seems to work.
Any suggestions?
PS: I remember someone here had this same question about six months ago. Is
it still on anyone's disk?

Depending on how close you plan on getting to the ball itself, you can skip the
mapping idea and use Hedra.PXP to generate a ball. I don't remember the
settings, but it didn't take me long to come up with it. I think you can still
find hedra.pxp in the utilities library if you have it.

Tyler, I uploaded a file long-time ago (soccer.zip, I think) that shows how to
do just this. Basically, the trick is in building the map correctly, or more
specifically, properly transforming from the spherical coordinate system to the
rectangular coordinate system.
Note that there will always be some distortion at the poles of a spherical map.
Also, a high-resolution map will work much better at the expense of memory at
render time.
