#Importing PAR frames

I rendered an animation out to my PAR, actually two animations. I am now trying to render a third animation compositing the first on the second animation. I set my PAR in 3ds to export targa, frames, and increment. I then went into video post and put the first frame of each animation in the correct spot, queueing alpha on the overlying animation. I then set the sequence to 300 frames, the length of each animation, and then told it to render back out to the PAR. For some reason, 3ds is importing the wrong frame numbers. It is starting with frame three and then skipping frames from there on. However it is importing the correct frame relative to the other animation. What am I doing wrong? I need this by tommorrow morning so any responses asap would be appreciated. Thanks, Andrew

Andrew, >> I set my PAR in 3ds to export targa, frames, and increment. << you'll need to use .ifl files in conjunction with targa, filename settings for the PAR. Use the Makeifl.exe utility to make the .ifl's if necessary.

Martin, Thanks, I'll try it. Do you know why it won't work using incremental frames? Andrew

Andrew, >> Do you know why it won't work using incremental frames? << I believe 3ds accesses the image twice in the video post process and this causes the frame counter to be incremented twice – or something like that. Gus Grubba knows more about the why's and wherefore's.

Martin: >> I believe 3ds accesses the image twice in the video post process and this >> causes the frame counter to be incremented twice – or something like that. Exactly right, mate! Greg Pyros

Andrew – If you're trying to pull both sets of sequential files off the PAR simultaneously, I'm sorry to have to tell you that it won't work. Tried before, and learned the hard way that this is a current limitation, since there is no "buffer" to hold several frames concurrently en route through video post from the PAR. You may have to do what I did – write the PAR files off to your hard disk, then have an ifl file pointing to those files. For specialized applications (such as using these files as a travelling matte) you may be able to get away with re-rendering the first or second animation directly to your hard drive as jpgs or as a fli file. Unlike Martin, though, I have been able to pull a single stream of sequential targas off the PAR without writing an ifl. Good luck! Bob

Bob, >> If you're trying to pull both sets of sequential files off the PAR simultaneously << I beg to differ but I've had success accessing multiple .ani files in video post compositions and as maps in regular renderings without any problem. As long as I used filenames in an .ifl file.

Thanks Martin, The .ifl plan worked great. Everything went out on time…. isn't c-serve great!!! Andrew

Andrew, >> The .ifl plan worked great. Everything went out on time…<< I'm so glad to hear that worked for you 🙂 >> isn't c-serve great!!! << well, "asoft" is at least <g>.

Martin, >>well, "asoft" is at least <g>. Good point… That's actually what I meant. Andrew

Bob: >> I'm sorry to have to tell you that it won't work. Hi there! There is no problem accessing multiple sequential series of Targas off the PAR if you are doing it from a single machine with the appropriate IFLs. What exactly were you doing? Greg Pyros

Greg – Hey, old Buddy! A couple months back, I was having a problem calling sequential targas from the PAR for a background, and two ifl files, and getting inconsistent results. Gus told me that this was a limitation caused by not having any buffering available to the software in calling multiple files for the same animation. I guess I just assumed that that was the source of my problem! Let me know if you know differently (Martin seems to have other experiences as well). See what happens – try to help a guy out – and find out you're the one with the problem! I'd love to be able to have this work for me. Thx Bob

Bob: Methinks you should try it again, now that you have months more of experience using the PAR! Set up a test with two or three IFL files and let me know what happens. What does not work is pulling the files from the PAR to a Network where multiple machines are making requests at the same time. A single machine would not have a problem using a few IFLs. Greg Pyros
