Good evening! Somebody told me that PharLap DOS extender imposes 64Mb physical RAM limit on 3DS and IPASes running under it. Is that true? Does that mean that I shouldn't upgrade my Pentium to 128Mb as I planned? Regards, Alex, Video International

That's absolutely false. – G

Good evening! Thanks for your answer. However, question remains: 128Mb, can 3DS utilize that much? If yes, for what? Isn't 64Mb enough for any 800×600 TGA output project? Regards, Alex, Video International

Hi Aleksey, << However, question remains: 128Mb, can 3DS utilize that much? >> Check out the last 4 pages of the Installation Manual. jonas[adesk]

Thank you, Jonas! >> Check out the last 4 pages of the Installation Manual. Actually, it was enough to look at the last page (p. 117). Alex, Video International

Heck… some of the 3DS machines (DEC Pentiums) in Frank Foster's group at Sony Pictures have 196Mb of RAM in them. – G

<<Heck… some of the 3DS machines (DEC Pentiums) in Frank Foster's group at Sony Pictures have 196Mb of RAM in them.>> Must be nice. I can't wait to get 128 MB, and a Pentium 90. I'm still running a 486 66 with 32 MB of ram. It drives me nut running out of ram. What would even be nicer is 500 MB two Pentiums chips, and 3D Studio utilizing both. Which bring up my question, Gary is this soon going to be Paralle rendering? I'm just wondering. Mike [SDP]

That's pretty absurd. The limit is actually 4 Terabytes, a bit more than the 64M they told you. What they might be thinking is about the "light" version of PharLap included with some compilers such as the Borland junk. That one is limited in order to make you pay for the full blown DOS extender if you need.

Hi! Thanks for clarification. >>The limit is actually 4 Terrabytes That what I thought. 386 in protected mode theoretically is capable of addressing that much, and NT and OS/2 take advantage of that. I wasn't quite sure about PharLap. >>some compilers such as the Borland junk We use Watcom 10. There was another question: Will I benefit from 128Mb? How 3DS cam utilize that much? Mesh, maps, IPASes data, current frame, 3ds.exe, what else? When I moved from 16 to 32Mb, there were almost no swapping. Is 128 too much??? Isn't 64Mb enough? Thanks again, Alex, Video International
