#Hi- Res Rendering
9 messages in this thread
I have been using 3dsr4 to produce images for use in print advertising
such as magazine ads and brochures. For the most part I have been
successful. There is one difficulty I have encountered that I am at a
loss about. Sometimes when I render to disk I get unpredicable
results in that part of the image is cut off, usually at the top or
bottom, although everything that I want in the final image is well
within the camera view and the safe frame. This does not happen
everytime. The images I am typically rendering have a final output
size of 8"X11". I am using a Pentium 66 megahertz machine with only
16megsRAM, but rendering times are not the problem. I would
appreciate E-mail from anyone who can offer insight to this
difficulty and feel free to post responses in the forum.
Did you render to a "Null" device, Jeff? Or to a display?
Exactly what resolution are you going for? Are you swapping during rendering?
-Alan
Thanks for the response,
I did not render to display, I am going for 5000X3000with 1.0 aspect
ratio. You bet it is swapping to the tune of a 60+Meg swap file. Any
suggestions …I know get more RAM, Phil Miller suggests at least 16M
more.
Jeff
Yup, big-time swapping can pretty much cause all sorts of problems in some
systems. I'd at _least_ de-frag the hard drive to optimize Pharlap's swapping
operations a bit.
Are you using a disk-caching device like SmartDrive?
-Alan
Thanks- I'll try de fragmenting the drive too. I am not using Smart
drive but instead a disk caching that shipped with my Iomega drive, I
believe. Would smart drive be better or worse?
Do you get an error message when writing the file? With only 16M,
hi-rez is going to be a bit painful for the system. It's possible
that only a portion of the image is being put to disk. If you're
doing hi-rez often, you'll wnat to be getting at least another 16M or
RAM.
– Phil
Thanks for the advice. No doubt I need more RAM, but I got no error
message.
Hi, I do a lot of 3700 x 4200 and up renders and found that I got some cutting
off of areas too. Then i started doing low res renders with the exact same
aspect ratio to see if I got the same thing. YES. So I now adjust my camera
until I get the low res, but correct aspect ratio render to look as I want it
then do the high res render and everything is ok.
Good Luck
Merry Christmas

Thanks for the info- So am I to understand that u use an aspect ratio
other than 1 for renders to print? Someone suggested that if I
change the res to proportions that are the same as screen proportions
ie same as 640X480.> 5000X3759, instead of the proportions of the
page 5100X3300 for 17X11" I will get less clipping. This was just a
theory and may not be practical in all situations. I take it this is
not the same as changing the aspect ratio in lo res as you do? What
do you think?
