#3DS and Pentium????

I blame the Internet for this. I don't know why, but I got several copies of
those Pentium bug messages in private e-mail, including one humdinger on CIS
that was also CC:'d to Rush Limbaugh and NBC News, among dozens of other
people. And too many journalists these days read the Internet for their news
tips on technology… Next thing you know, there will be big news stories about
a rash of GPFs under Windows, or the most relatively insignificant bugs in
Windows 95.
These days, Carl Sagan is running around saying the chances of the Earth
getting hit by a big asteroid are one in 2,000 over the next 100 years, but
he's just trying to sell books and increase government spending on space
flight. 🙂
Today IBM announced it will no longer be shipping any Pentium PC's because of
the FDIV bug and claims that the bug is "much worse than expected" this is
insane.
IMHO, this is just a shot at the Pchip from a company that only has the rights
to manufacture 486 technology.
Now that Ambra's gone belly-up, does IBM even sell Pentiums anyway?

right you are!!! bear in mind IBMs vested interest in Power-PC. "much worse

what does that mean. some astro-physicist, doing Quantum calculations to
displace matter over multi-versal time in parallel reality, lost his french
poodle. Well, that was sad, but does not impact to many of us. Now, if the
french poodle were his girl friends, then maybe we would have a problem on hour
hands.

The list of people who have incorporated poodles in their concept
pieces is long and curly. Chihuahua's have been ignored for too long.
I once painted a 7'x5.5' oil of a chihuahua next to a 7'x5.5'
painting of a leopard skin dinner jacket with excellent red satin
interior. The two-panel piece had a few journeys out into the world,
many enjoyed them, but nobody would go for the big-time acquisition
and installation. Perhaps if it was a poodle… who knows. BUT, I
will persist! This very piece of work is to become an animation, and
the maps and meshes will meet 3-DS in March. The chihuahua will stand
as-is.
I don't know… but this is prone to be interesting. IBM with its screwy
announcement of dropping the Pentium (obviously in favor of it own crappy Power
PC). Specially when you think that less than 5% of IBM sales involve systems
with the Pentium. I won't be surprized of this getting to Oprah, or even the
National Enquire (747 lands on the moon due to faulty Pentium chip in its
lavatory)…

Oh darn! The prices of Pentiums will plummet. Maybe I'll buy 5 more <BG>
Funny, if rendering isn't a test of floating point, I don't know what is. I
render night after night on my P60 ( no probs). I wonder what "tests" they use.
This might be a blessing in disguise for us render-farm wanna be's.

I have not bothered to try to follow the cognoscenti's discussion of this on
the Internet or anywhere else, but have you heard of any actual bug reports of
any products that illuminate the bug? It's such a tiny thing to worry about,
compared with the frequency and severity of other software bugs. Typical
innumeracy. So the original bug was discovered by a professor who plays in SPSS
all day.
Do lock-ups or crashes in Microsoft OSes or applications get this much press?
hi John… i haven't been up here on asoft and saw your 3DS/pent.news all over
Internet letters.
lot's of people report wierdness in the pentiums in acad r12;
but who knows. 3DS is not skitty in any commands on P90, like acad.
Maybe IBM can PR against Intel because of the district Court rulings in Texas
in favor of Cyrix Corp, "a Richardson Texas, chip maker,"
that affirmed an earlier opinion "that IBM may manufacture Cyrix chips
used in personal computers." "Separately, the federal Circuit Court of Appeals
in Washington upheld a Jan. 24, 1994, lower-court ruling that Cyrix and its
customers did not infringe on an Intel patent."
Appeal is to the Supreme Court and Intel is "reviewing" this, or must pay $5
million to Cyrix.
According to Tuesday's Wall St. Journal in a little article back on B6 the same
day as the IBM returns the Intel Pentiums story broke on the front pages. bye

Guess I'm a little embarassed about jumping to conclusions right about now.
So I'm not really sure what to make of all this news you bring about Intel
and Cyrix. But it sounds like good news for somebody!

Right on, Rachel. This is, and not the PowerPC, the reason for the PR war (IMHO
and in OHOs -other humble opinions =) You only have to check out the internal
wars between the IBM PC division and the PPersonal systems, to see that there
is little connection there.
