I have just received some CAD files in .DWG format that the sender claims are AutoCad – Are they an AutoCad format and whatever format they happen to be are there any suggestions on how to convert them to use in 3DS? And while I have your attention (whomever you may be!) the engineering department where I work uses a system called CADIA- or something close to that. Is there a way to get these files converted to a usable format also? Thanks for any and all help- Merry Christmas ! –

>>>I have just received some CAD files in .DWG format that the sender claims are AutoCad – Are they an AutoCad format and whatever format they happen to be are there any suggestions on how to convert them to use in 3DS? <<< AutoCAD uses .dwg format, so they should load fine, depending on which version of ACAD. >>>And while I have your attention (whomever you may be!) the engineering department where I work uses a system called CADIA- or something close to that. Is there a way to get these files converted to a usable format also?<<< Probably Catia, which supports IGES output and ACAD has IGES support.

If your files are in fact AutoCAD .DWGs, you can convert them for 3DS use by loading them into AutoCAD and saving them as DXF, which 3DS will load. However, depending on the content of the files, it may not be as simple as that. If the data is 2D only, it will only be useful in the shaper. If it is 3D data, it may still be hard to work with unless it was created with 3DS in mind and organized properly in AutoCAD. Some AutoCAD/3DS experts hang out here if you have some specific questions. JKJ

Doug, DWG is the native file format of AutoCAD. If you want to import the geometry into 3D Studio, you have to convert the DWG file to DXF. This can be done within AutoCAD or with one of the DWG-to-DXF converters found in GO ACAD. CATIA is a mainframe CAD system. It can produce IGES files and (supposely) DXF. Dietmar
