I am involved in a brand new high school television station and we are looking to purchase some digital editing equipment in the $12,000 to $18,000 range. Right now we have notinhg but a pair of donated Sony 8mm Camcorders. My big question is which editing system should I get????? Power Mac 8100 AV/110, 16/2GB, 15" Apple Monitor, Video Vision Studio Pro(w/4GB Array Drive) or Amiga Video Toaster/Flyer or SOMETHING ELSE Currently we produce 20-30 minute news/variety program, which is played on Community Access Cable TV. We edit it at post-production studio, but that is way to costly and we need to incorporate the equipment into the school. Any help at all would be greatly apreciated. -Justin Forer President, RETV

Justin, I have six years worth of free-lancing under my belt, but I am a high school senior at Deerfield Beach High School in Deerfield Beach, FL. I help run (which involves making most of the equiptment reccomendations to the teacher for use with the school board and putting togther our systems <for now.) the Broadcast Communications Magnet at my school. We are federaly funded and have one hell of a facility to move into on the third. Due to school I have become some what of an expert in "School Level Equiptment". We are currently looking at a system called theFast Syetem. I am pushing for the Media 100, which is MAC based. By the way did you mean digital or non-lineal? Either choice would be good.. but it depends on whether you want to use that equipment for anything else. The Amiga will be the best all-around video workhorse while the MAC will open up more avenues into other mainstream (non-video) applications. My personal choice would be the Amiga. I use one and run MAC applications on the Amiga with an emulator. -Jonathan // Amiga online via Autopilot. MAC Quadra 900 and \X/ 486 emulation. E-Mail: jonathanb@delrina.com

Justin, I would throw at least one more system into your search and that is the FAST Video Machine with the Digital/Player Recorder option. The Video Machine can run on the MAC or Windows operating environments, and is a stable, powerful, hybrid video editing system. With that said, the Video Toaster/Flyer has some outstanding specifications regarding the quality of the video itself (using the VTASC compression algorithm) and deserves a real good look. The status of Amiga Technology in general is questionable right now, however. Commodore Business Machines, the makers of the Amiga, are currently in Bankruptcy proceedings. There seem to be a number of parties interested in continuing the Amiga Technology, however, at this time there is no official resolution to these proceedings. -John

Lots of references to Fast Movie Machine Pro. Do you have a phone or address so I can contact them and find a local reseller? Thanks

John – I am expecting a Media 100 vers. 2.0 on a PowerPC for a Videography Hands-On review any day now. It will probably appear in the Feb. or March issue. Feel free to E-Mail in a month to see how it is going. Bob

After reading some of the other repolies i wanted to let you know about a higher priced but significantly more refined mac based system from Avid called the Media Suite Pro. I believe that basic systems are available in the 15,000 to 20,000 range. What nice about this system is that it has been refined to provide 60 field/sec full frame video with real time transitions and a very easy to use, intuitive user interface for video and sound. No, I'm not associate with Avid in any way but I've been an independent video producer for 8 years and have edited both film and video off-line and on line from simple cuts only SVHS and 3/4" to Betcam SP A/B rolls to D2. I'm currently researching systems at a higher level from Avid called Media Composer which we will use for broadcast quality productions at Ohio State University Athletics. If I can answer any questions about any aspect of video please don't hesitate to email me. I'm interested inlearning more about developing CD-ROM multimedia programs.

Hi Ahmet! Is this Media Composer going to feed the scoreboard or is it for other applications? -John

Ahmet – I agree that it is a nice system, but it is out of the price range specified at the start of this thread (school systems loose planned budgets frequently but almost never get more). Also, until MSP offers off-line resolutions, it has significantly less utility for such an environment. Bob

Hi – I'm a neophyte, but I've been reading about Immix with their add-on cube for the Mac. How does that compare? Caren Eliezer

Hi, I think most of us, except a lucky few who can either afford this stuff or already work for a company that's invested are neophytes. I've heard of the Immix Cube, too. Don't know much about it though. I can recommend a trade journal, "Video Systems" which is put out by the I.T.V.A. They follow new developments closely though many of the articles are submitted by manufacturers so you have to read between the lines about limitations and performance. Also, there have been a couple of really good articles in Mac World. My exposure has been limited to the Avid Media Suite Pro, and then only as an observer, not hands on. I think a friend of mine here in Columbus, OH, just invested in the Cube. I'll pick his brain and get back to you.

I would like to offer another solution to you. TAO Media Systems manufactures an edit controller called Editizer. It is an A/B controller capable of controlling HI-8(Ctrl-L), Panasonic AG-1970, RS-422 (High end professional), and RS-232 VCRs. Also it can integrate a non-linear system from Fast Forward Video into your editing system. For more information on the Bandit from Fast Forward Video, contact them at 800-755-8463. If you would like a demo disk on TAO's Editizer, contact me at e-mail address 73532,2041 or call 800-TAO-EDIT. I will be glad to send you a demo disk and literature. Paul McVicker TAO Media Systems
