ThreeSpace, a Los Angeles based computer animation and interactive media company, will open in January its Motion Capture studio. The optical based system is able to handle up to 120 samples per second of data coming from a large number of control points without the need of heavy suits and cables, and the resulting data is much cleaner than with the commonly used magnetic systems. The studio will function as a service bureau for other computer animation companies, as well as for in-house production. The data can be delivered in raw mode, or integrated with most animation software, such as 3D Studio, Wavefront, Prisms, Alias, and SoftImage. ThreeSpace has employment openings for 3D artists as well as game programmers. For more information please call ThreeSpace at (310)837-4450 or fax (310)837-4470.

Hi Alberto, Your service bureau sounds very interesting. You mention that your motion data will easily integrate with 3DS. Does this mean you will be directly supporting Puppeteer from Schrieber Instruments? Or will you have a proprietary means for your motion data to be interfaced with 3DS? Will your studio be a Flock of Birds installation, or photo/video-based like that of BioVision's? Or something else? Thanks in advance, -Alan

Hi Alan, Our motion capture studio will be an optical based installation with 6 120Mhz cameras. The integration we are working on for 3D Studio will support the new IK module in release 4 combined with its scripting capabilities. Al

Hi Alberto, Thanks for the information. An optical-based motion-capture studio in nearby LA sure sounds interesting! So you're going to directly support 3DS via the IK Plug-In? As it is a seperate module itself, how will your motion-data be introduced to it? Will you write your own Plug-In routine that will allow the data to be decribed to a "skeleton" that can then be linked to a mesh character and subsequently edited in the IK module? Or do you have another solution? Thanks much for your time, -Alan

Al, >> You should drop by sometime. << yes, I certainly should (and will). Are you still in the same location? If not, you could e-mail your address, if you like. I've been fascinated with optical-motion capture for some time now, although nobody I know personally has the equipment. Until now anyway. Have you seen Acclaim's work for the game "Alien Trilogy"? It knocked my Birkenstocks off <g>.

Martin, We are still at the same location, but the studio will be in Hollywood. In March we are planing to move everything to the same location. Acclaim's work was done on an optical system as well. We hope to get the same results on our work. I'll be out of town for ten days, but let's meet early next month. Happy Holidays Al

Al, >> I'll be out of town for ten days, but let's meet early next month << sounds cool. I'll be out of town from tomorrow until Tuesday in the new year too. I'm going to Mexico 🙂
