My wife Kathleen and I are moving to the San Francisco area in March.
We are trying to gain experience in pre-production, production and
post-production of documentary films and videos with the intent of
producing our own in the future. We would welcome any information
from or about small companies that are involved in this type of
work! Thanks. Happy new year!
P.S. We are thinking of buying the Sony Hi8 VX3. Does anyone have
any comments on price and/or performance about it??

I do not use the VX3, but I can tell you why I bought a Canon L2 instead. It
boiled down to the fact that the VX3 does not have manual audio level controls,
and this was totally unacceptable to me.
Both the Canon and Sony have serious limitations for really serious works (no
balanced audio ins, no manual gain up, lousy zoom, etc). For this reason I
plan on buying either a Sony EVW-300 or Toshiba TSC-200 in the nxt 6-8 months
— both offer a great deal more functionality and the Sony is now around $5500
with lens!

Depends on the documentary, seems to me. Ken Burns seems to be doing pretty
well…
