The VTU Expo was excellent. The most telling was Tim Jenison's
announcement that the Flyer was essentially platform independent, and that
they would continue to support the Amiga so long as there were Amiga's.
With over 50 vendors showing Toaster/Flyer add-ons, Newtek has a strong
presence. They have already made arrangements with NAB to have a large
Newtek booth at NAB in April '95 as well as a Toaster Pavilion. In
addition, NAB will be selling Toaster and Flyer training seminars through
its own publicity!!
It was also evident that the Arexx front-end market for the Toaster/Flyer
is just beginning to be explored.
Basically, A GREAT SHOW – more impressive than any previous WOC or WOA.

One Question, though.
I was under the impresion that the Flyer worked in conjunction
with the Toaster.Since the Toaster is not platform independant,
how do they propose to port it. Did they mention a multi platform Toaster ?

Remember, they didn't announce a multiplatform Flyer. They only said they
could have one within 12 months.
You're right on that. However, Tim made note of the fact that the Flyer
was one of the most comprehensive boards ever made. It has four stereo
channels, in/out, an input video digitizer, dual output video channels
(all requiring AD/DA conversion) and three dedicated SCSI-II controllers
for 21 devices. It can also digitize and store time code. And interface
with the Toaster for control communications. Tim felt it indicated what
engineering capabilities Newtek now had (the best team he's ever seen at
Newtek) and that they could do most anything now.
A Flyer without a Toaster to drive would be a race car driver without his
car. Time will tell, especially if Alex tires of these delays and goes
away disgusted (as indicated by a previous post by Dan Stets).

As you may have well guessed, that was my point. And face it, that's a good
thing.
Because a PC toaster/flyer combo would _KILL_ what little is left of the Amiga
market.
Not to say that video is the sole reason to own an Amiga.(The outstanding multi
tasking,
low overhead OS and extensive Arexx support are three of my faves.. 🙂
But here is my case in point: I've sold a few copies of the stand alone
Lightwave package, and
_everyone_ that bought was interested in NewTech's offer to upgrade it to _any_
platform
that LightWave supports. That shows me where the market is going….. It's
going away 🙁

Or if we all tire and go away. Like I've said before, I wonder what happens to
the liquidator's
obligation to obtain the highest bid, when no one's left who will make a
bid…….

Hi Mike –
Reviewing tonight's postings I see that C=UK has declared themselves the
winner. The only trouble with that is the date given was Dec 20th,
Tuesday. That is the day confirmed to be the day when both CEI and C=UK
had placed bids, with deposits (so the liquidators would accept them), on
the table.
Further posts discuss the multimedia market as an Amiga strength, and
there "Only Amiga Makes It Possible". It's quite possible, that video and
multimedia may offer the Amiga a real future.
Again, it's wait and see –

Just a small spelling note: The Toaster's makers are NewTek, not NewTech.
It may not seem important, but there are a number of other companies with
similar, not to mention almost identical, names. Can't afford to have
people any more confused than when they started out. *8^)

I raised this very same question back in June. IMHO the liquidator is either
supplying the creditors with false information about the bidding process or the
creditors themselves have decided to stall because of some hidden agenda.

The Flyer is basicly two Virtual VTRs on a board. Two very high end
VTRs. Without a Toaster attached it is just a very cheap VTR. It really is
that simple. I dont know about you, but in the edit bay I work in there
are at least 4 beta sp decks. Now,if I could build that same bay for, oh
lets say $12,000 (not counting HDs which are droping in price as you read
this). I think I may be saving several thousand dollars, and getting
better quality, too.
People I have talked to since the VTU Expo seem to think that Jenisons
statments were pointing towards a PC Toaster. this is a very limited line
of thought. He Said that NewTek is concentrating on 2 products. Lightwave
and the Flyer. The Toaster created a video uprising compared to the
Revolotion that Newtek is about to start. This time next year the little
company form Topeka could be taking on Sony! If NewTek sold stock I would
be hording it right now. If it works as well as it is supposed to AND is
marketed corectly. Video Tape could be Dead as we know it…
