Attn: Tom Jones, I noticed your questions regarding the Amiga and since we at
Interactive MicroSystems, Inc. have just finished some very interesting
marketing analysis I took the liberty to share some of our findings with you.
We have manufactured MediaPhile Desktop Video Products since 1986 and are in
tune w with all three platforms IBM, Apple, and Amiga. There are currently
2.8mil Amigas worldwide, 800,000 of which are in the U.S.A.. There are
approximax. 70,000 Toaster users most of which are in the USA. Interactive
MicroSystems, Inc. has many exciting upcoming products to announce for the
Amiga pertaining to desktop video production. We have be been in frequent
contact with John Anderson, Chris Ludwig as well as others regarding future
development of the Amiga platform. I enjoy however, the constant excitement
this forum seems to offer and some of the ideas are actually quit interesting

Dr. Peter Kittel (formerly of CBM Germany) has stated that as of the end of
Dec. '93 there were 1.7M total Amigas sold in Germany alone. Using that
figure, and given that the German market was approximately 30% of the worldwide
market, your total sales figure of 2.8M seems to be on the low side.

There are supposed to be close to 3M Amiga owners in the UK alone.

There aren't 6M Amigas, and even if they were, it's not 99% in UK and Germany,
1% in the rest of the world. So someone is making up numbers.
The largest rough number I've heard from a reasonable source is 5M Amigas
total, and it might be closer to 4M.
You hear all sorts of figures. Adding up the UK sales figures over the
years, the ones that Commodore UK always provided just after Xmas, you get
just under 3M. Sure, these figures might be made up. Just as your
reasonable source could have made up their figures.
It might be 2.8M as was suggested.

One of the reasonable sources is Commodore's own press releases. They made a
few announcements of the form "X millionth sold."

I mean when Commodore was something like a real company, and from the corporate
headquarters rather than a branch office.
Press releases are suddenly "reasonable sources"? Ho ho ho! 🙂 What would be
more interesting to be would be to estimate how many Amigas are still in use,
the breakdown by model, estimates of sales of accellerator cards, etc.
By reasonable I meant "the largest number that could possibly be true."

Let's remember that 3M Amigas doesn't mean 3M Amiga owners. I have a 1000 in
the closet, and nearly every Amiga owner I know has more than one machine.

But aren't they offset by the many Amiga owners who have less than one machine?
I have only one and this is an A500. I think the most are A500's and this
is the reason why the Amiga survived and now dies! To build cheap machines
with no abilities to expand was a deadly mistake 🙁
