#PP&S 040 Blues
5 messages in this thread
I have a PP&S 040/28 for the 2000(NOT a Zeus!) that is giving me fits. I
removed Init040 since it was unreliable, and am using addmem and set040 with
the proper 68040.library and setpatch. The problem is with my 2091 controller.
Speed is about 1/3 to 1/5 what it should be, and if I set the 32bit to a lower
priority than the normal fastram, the speed goes back up, but I can't transfer
files larger than ~1 meg without a crash. Also, when running the 32bit in lower
priority, Sysinfo claims that I fall from 21 mips to 3 mips. Does ANYONE have
a clue how to make the 2091 and the 040 cohabitate(just bought ver. 7 roms for
2091 and did little good) or do I need to buy an Oktagon?

I had to dump my 2091 when I added a PP&S 040 to my A2000, I was getting
floppy disk speed drive access ( well a little better, about 47K/sec ). I
put in a Trumpcard Pro and things picked up quite a bit ( > 1 meg/sec )
but eventually went to a 4008 for external SCSI access. I believe I tried
every patch and trick and nothing resolved the DMA access problems between
the 2091 and the PP&S card. Another good card choice is the Trifecta 2000,
it offers both fast SCSI and IDE drive support plus 8 megs of ZIP memory
space, I just put one in my spare A2000 and it is one quick little sucker!

Well I just solved a PP&S/040 poblem that has been causing me fits
for quit some time now. I don't know if this will help you at all but
here is. But first… your DMA masks a set correctly? well, just
thought I'd ask.. anyway, my problem was unpredictable SCSI lockups
usually during directory reads and of course data r/w's. I moved my
setpatch command to the first line in the startup-sequence and this
has seemed to solve that problem.
Besides the xsfer speed.. how is going back to addmem (etc.)
working? Are you also running the older 68040.lib? what about the
ppi040.lib?
BTW, I have a GVP_II controller.
Good Luck.
The Worst That Is..
Is Better than the Best that Could Be.
Try these two. Lower the DMA MASK to 0XFFFFFE and down load VB2091.lha.
Jay,
I have a PP&S 040/28 and 2091 in one of my 2000's and I experience none of
the problems you are describing. I am not sitting at it currently, but if
you would like to know any version numbers or anything else about my setup
let me know. I have never done anything in particular to acheive this
performance, it just works, currently.
