#DOS/WINDOWS TOASTER
16 messages in this thread
I had heard a rumor a while back that the TOASTER might be available soon as a
VLB/PCI add in for 486/Pentium/RISC platforms…Any truth to this rumor?
Richard –
SOON? That's the rub. Tim Jenison indicated that the Flyer was almost
platform independent (on purpose) and that this might allow Newtek to have
a PC Toaster withing a year's time.
He clearly stated that this was not a product announcement!!

Henry, The Flyer and the Toaster are 2 different Animals tho. The Flyer
not being platform dependent has nothing to do with the Toaster being
ported to another platform . it simply means that Newtek can in the future
sell the Flyer for other Platforms as a NLE .

Tim Jenison did indicate that the current R&D team is the best he feels
Newtek has ever had and that the Flyer, practically a computer on a board
with Video and Audio In and Out and three SCSI-II controllers, indicates
that teams capability. Lightwave has shown the software can be ported, so
putting the Amiga chips on that board is all that remains. Or improving
the Toaster to bypass them.
All speculation, of course, but I believe when Newtek said it was taking
steps to protect itself against a CBM failure, I thought they had plans to
buy CBM. It appears that have thought this through and realize a PC port
solves the problem permanently and increases their market enormously.

Sorry, but if the Toaster were to bypass the Amiga chips, it could no
longer be classified as a Toaster.
NewTek may, one day, produce a platform independant which will give you
titling, FX, and such, but it won't be a Toaster.
LightWave being ported was to satisfy users who wanted to use other
platforms without the Toaster. They just wanted the renderer.
Just plopping Amiga chips onto the Toaster card is not as simple as you
make it sound. That's the problem when people don't understand how the
Toaster and Amiga are married.
As for NewTek buying CBM, they don't have the resources to buy it and it
would seriously split their concentration and efforts in developing their
current hardware and software.
So, my advice is that you get LW 4.0 for your PC and a Flyer (when it
comes as a standalone) and not spread rumours. Wait for official
announcements.

I realise that my post is speculation based on the dealer meeting at VTU
expo and Tim Jenison's address. And believe me, I've always considered
hardware developement much harder than software, and I'm amazed at how
easy Jim Drew seems to think it is, looking at his posts here and the
current success of his e586.
By the way, as a Partners Plus dealer, I've learned to sell what I have,
not what might be.

That's all that you have to do is to state that the comments were
speculative. It helps to keep these nasty rumours from getting out of
their cages. *8^)

I agree with you entirely Henry. If they can get the same or BETTER
quality from a Clone at approx the same price they'll rule the World.

Richard,
No truth to that rumor. However, there was some excitement at the recent VTU
expo concerning a new product out of Germany called the "draco" PC card, which
is supposed to "emulate" the custom chips on the Amiga. If this in fact turns
out to be a functional Amiga "clone" for the PC, it sets up the possibility of
some sort of PC expansion chassis to accomadate the video slot connection for
the Toaster. This would be the answer to all those concerned with the Amiga's
platform collapse.
I did not attend the show myself, so I'm afraid I can't provide any more info
such as whether or not it's a VLB card etc.

I don't think the DraCo does custom chip emulation. From what I've read
in AmigaUser, it's based around the Retina Z3 board; it is compatible with
some Amiga hardware (VLab/Toccata) but not the Toaster or other video slot
devices.
– Jim, on AP!
None that I know of. Lightwave 3D which is bundled with the Toaster will
soon be available on Windows/Windows NT systems but the Toaster itself.
Dunno. There are of course Toaster like Devices already available for the
IBM/Clone World.

When…when…when…!! This seems to be a very well guarded secret. Any
clues??
TIA,

PMFJI – Tim Jenison indicated that Lightwave for SGI and Windows NT would
be available in early '95, very likely in January. They were showing it
at the VTU Expo. This should be a great market for them with the current
utilization of LW in TV.
