#MacWorks for the Amiga
5 messages in this thread
Is it possible for the Amiga to read single-sided Mac-formatted disks? If so,
it should be possible to write a MacWorks-type program for it. If you're not
familiar with MacWorks, it's the OS that allows Mac software to run on a MacXL
(really a Lisa). It consists of a modified version of the Macintosh ROMs that
reside in RAM. The Lisa hardware is _very_ different that the Macintosh
hardware, so if it could be done on the Lisa, it should be possible on most
68000-based sytems with similar screen resolution and similar disk hardware.
– Mike
It looks like the Amiga disk controller circuitry can interpret the Apple bit
format (Woz machine) but here's the $64 question…What about drive speed? The
Mac (and Lisa) use variable speed drives in an attempt to even out the bit
density from inner to outer tracks. I see two possibilities: 1. The Amiga can
change drive speed also. (haven't seen information leading to that conclusion)
or, 2. The disk controller circuitry can lock onto the different clock rates
that would result from reading a Mac disk on a constant speed drive. This may
be possible. Who knows? Maybe Jay Miner!

Tim.. the drive motor speed cannot be changed (I get that from looking at the
pinouts of the drive port).
The only alternative is to track the clocking speed, so that must be the case.
The disk controller, being a VLSI custom chip, could certainly handle it if
designed properly.
Regards, Larry.
