Jez, thanks for the offer. Let me see how the shell shapes up and I'll holler
if I think it needs a machine code terminal routine. I've got most of the
terminal routine written already, but I'd really like to optimize this version
so I may yet take you up on this.
Bob…would VMCO for the Amiga HAVE to be Compuserve-specific?
Is there any way the user could modify it to use on other
networks with other prompts?
Could it hold or be built with a library of prompts from
different networks' conference areas?
I really LOVE the whole idea. (and I thought that the illustration
of the screen shot in Compute! was so cute!, esp. the guys who
used a Charlie Brown, a Snoopy, a Ghostbuster, and a little
stalk-eyed alien as their face icons! Where do the faces come
from? How are they made?)
The Charlie Brown and Snoopy icons were ones I drew up as defaults for people
who haven't created face files yet. Thus, anyone coming into CO can still be
seen and heard by others.
The icons are made up with some of the Mac utilities used for creating and
editing resources. Icons have a specific format on the Mac, being 32×32 bits.
I could make VMCO run on other systems, but I'd rather dedicate it to CIS for a
number of reasons.
Okay, Bob, thanks for the explanation. I'm really wow'd by your VMCO, just
from that one screen shot, never having seen it running in real time. BTW,
what do you do when more than 20 people are in the conference? You've only
got 20 chairs. Pretty nice of Compute to give it a whole page! Regds, Harv
Conferees appearing after the 19th chair take turns as they speak sharing
seat 20. This can get hairy in big conferences (40 or 50), so I'll be looking
for a new approach with the Amiga VMCO. I'll probably use some sort of LRU
routine.
How about making the conference table bigger? Make it wider, and scroll
horizontally. Have it 'understand' USTs and eliminate people who have left
without signing out. – Bela

Check out the Amiga bbs at (615) 868-7860. We support 300 or 1200 baud and
are open 24 hrs. a day 7 days a week. It is an open bbs.

Oh, I see what you mean about understanding USTs. I could do a periodic silent
UST and parse the output, comparing it against the current roster of conferees,
eliminating those who aren't there any longer. Good idea. I'm also going to
implement an LRU algorithm for assigning new seats after the alloted ones are
full. My experience with the Mac version showed that a busy CO can wreak havoc
on your disk drives when all of the overflow goes to seat 20.
Speaking of busy CO's..did you see the bulletin in MAUG? Sculley's got his own
face file now and the Official New Product Announcements are going to be made
on VMCO Thurdsay January 16th.
