Steve, and much LESS clear. Since structure copy is now part of the ANSI standard (and I have NO idea what Ritchy & Thompson were thinking of by leaving it out), it's fairly safe to use…and fairly portable. Victor A. Wagner, Jr.

senile too, but Thompson and Ritchie did the language & the compiler….Kernighan wrote the book (or so I recall…I'll dig out the Bell Tech Journal, and check)

Vic, The Bell Tech Journal article was by Ritchie, Johnson, Lesk and Kernighan. Thompson and Ritchie did UNIX (or at least wrote the article). Don

Don, Thanks for the info. I've been unjustly accusing Thompson for lo, these many years. I guess I'll have to apologize to him, if/when I meet him.

Nope, C is all Ritchie's. I think Thompson was involved in UNIX. – Dave

Having suffered through a couple of ports of code that did direct structure assignments to compilers that didn't support it, I don't agree. If the code is well documented, that is. (And I always comment my code) 🙂 I was just trying to point out that if you don't have a compiler that supports it, there is an easy way to get around the problem. Steve
