There is a persistent rumor that the slow disk I/O will be improved
tremendously in the "near" future. If you look at the specs on the Amiga
disks they are quite fast in terms of raw transfer rate. It's the
operating system that slows things down, and I've heard that the fellow who
wrote the disk I/O in the first place (MetaComCo) might patch it. Anyone
else hear the same thing? The hard disk is slow too. Even with DMA you're
limited to about 50K/sec when the hardware is capable of hundreds. Again
it's the OS.
Tim King (Metacomco) has indeed fixed AmigaDOS and increased it's disk i/o
by a factor of 2. Last I heard (at CES) is that he is trying to get CBM to
pay him for his work before he'll give them the code.
Awright! Let's hope CBM pays the man. A faster DOS would really do wonders
for the Amiga, especially in the initial impression to someone that is used
to a machine that can get a directory faster than you can write it down.
