Where's the Print?

I just got my January upgrades for WordPerfect. I copied the disks, copied the
macros over, etc. When I went to install my printers I discovered something
nasty: I keep getting asked for the PRINT disk, even though I _think_ I have
made the installations as I did before. Then I tried booting from the WP disk
instead of using CLI and noticed someting missing: the PRINT icon is gone.
Sure enough, my old Sept release had PRINT right on the WP disk and it is not
there on the Jan release. Does that mean we have to inssert the PRINT disk
each time we want to print? Egad. I copied the old print program to dhe new
disk, but I still got the requestor. Is this the way it is supposed to be or
is this an oversight on WP corp's part?
In any case, is there any way to get the PRINT program onto the WP disk and
fool the disk into looking for it there?
Thank heaven I saved one copy of my old WP disk. I will use that, even
risking crashes, until I can solve this new problem.

I don't have time to try to duplicate your efforts on my system just
now but some thoughts come to mind that may help you out with out my having to
create some workbench disks. If you boot from the WP disk (a copy that is) and
have the print program on that disk and you still get a requester to insert the
'print' disk then what you should be able to do is put a line in your
startup-sequence file that reads 'assign print: wp:' I am pretty sure that
this will clear up your problem. If you try to type that line from the CLI
after the print disk has once been read by the system (on that boot) I think
that you will get an error message. If you boot from the WP disk, type 'assign
print: wp:', and attempt to print, the system should use the copy of the print
program that you copied to the WP disk. 73, bill
Thanks for the tip, Bill. I will try that assign statement. I cannot see how
people who only have the December release are going to manage if they are new
to this game. Certainly having to insert the Print tdisk each time you print
it annoying, so I am curious about what WP Corp had in mind. I also noticed
that the new Print program is a bit bigger than the old one.

I called WPCorp this morning. Turns out there is a Readme file on the LEARN
disk that tells of the six files that have to be copied to WP: Also, it
explains about some new AMIGA key with letters combinations (following
Commodore's suggestions in Intuition manual) and about a new Postscript utility
included if you have such a printer online.
Unfortunately, there was not note telling folks to look at the readme file, so
WP customer support has been pretty busy. Anyhow, it seems to work fine now.

I just received my updates as well and discovered the same problem. After
investigating all the disks, I found a "readme" on the LEARN disk which said to
copy the print program over to wp after setup is done and to assign print: to
wp:. Nothing like making a confusing setup even more confusing for everyone!

I tried my old system (diehard that I am) which is to boot from my bootdisk and
use Newdisk to make WP the sys disk. I copied the new print to the new WP and
did the assign. When I went to the print control of WP, it complained that it
couldn't load the program. So I stuck Print in df1: and it loaded and I went
through all the definitions again. Then I took PRINT out and put in Learn and
tried to print something from that and got a Wrong kind of file message. Oh
well. Guess I will have to call Orem in the AM.

Jim,
With the January release, WP changed where the print program is shipped. It
is now part of the Printer disk, and consequently WP looks for it via the
print: logical. If you move the print program to your wp: directory, just do
an 'assign prt: wp:' and you should be ok. Don't do this until you have done
the 'install printers', unless you have a hard disk. After doing the printer
installation, copy the print program and the sPrt.xxx files to your wp
directory.
