As I recall, GNU is a Unix imitation written by Richard Stallman (or planned
to be written by ….) Stallman is known primarily by his imitations, since he
seems to be incapable of doing anything other than taking the work of others
and imitating them; creation isn't his forte.
He also hates the idea of capitalism and admires Immanuel Kant, who preached
that life is evil, nothing is knowable, and selfishness (i.e., life, to
re-iterate) is evil.
Brent, Just so you won't be misled, Richard Stallman (or RMS, as he prefers
to be called), is one of the most brilliant programmers around, among other
things, he is the originator of EMACS, which has been much imitated, not the
other way around. He is probably even a better programmer than P. Oliver, and
is a lot more interesting to read. Best SDB

i thought Emacs was his. Kant did not preach those things. His biggest
fault was he had a split world view which denied the possibility of
approaching the “spiritual'' world with rationality. thus, all religion and
morality becomes phenomenological or psychological. I too find Kant's
philosophy abhorent. But he is not the strawman you present.

I would agree with the Sysop's likely opinion of this reply; but to keep it
short, I consider Kant to be the most evil philosopher in history and the
root cause of the 20th century's insane idealogical crusades that have left
tens of millions dead in their wake, and many attacks on the intellectual
foundations that have led t the decline of America in recent years, including
s! B attacks as are represented by one of Kant's followers, Richard
Stallman. Read "The Ominous Parallels" by Leonard Peikoff for a chilling
comparison between the idealogical trends of pre-Nazi Germany and America
today (including exactly the sort of ideas put forth in Stallman's 3/85
article in Dr. Dobb's.)
