I'd like to try growing some kind of grain in my garden. Probably just
to try once. At least once anyway, who knows. I remember reading an
article in Organic Gardening many years back but can't find the article.
I think I'd prefer to try something that could be grown during the
winter when the garden wasn't in normal use. I make a lot of my own bread
and have my own wheat grinder so that would be the use I'm headed for.
I'm in Northern California in the valley area. Any ideas or
suggestions? Where would I get seed? Are there any books?

The article on growing grains was in OG Dec 1988. If you don't have that
copy, I'll send you the article (e-mail me your address). Johnny's
Selected Seeds (207-437-4357) catalog has some grains, including winter
wheat, oats, rye, etc. and can probably advise you on suitability for your
area. A closer source for you is Bountiful Gardens in Willits CA
(707-459-3390). I notice that the OG article has a picture of Rosalind
Creasy's Los Altos CA garden, growing spring wheat; 100 sq ft yielded 20
loaves of bread.
That's what I was looking for. I'll try the Willits call when I get
a chance.
I have about 1000 square feet available, though only about half of it
has been in use yet. Its something I've wanted to try.
