I strongly recommend that those of you who regularly transfer files between
PC and Amiga have a look at Twin Express which was uploaded recently. It
can be really fast, depending on your processor speeds and allows a certain
amount of file management on the two machines from either machine. For me
this is faster than transfer by floppy disk and much more convenient. I now
have a null modem cable connected between my two machines permanently (via
Bridgeboard) and have no further need of CrossDos.

You can free up your serial ports (Amiga & BB) of the null modem connection
by getting Consultron's Ambassador. It's sort of like Cross-Dos for
Bridgeboard users, allowing transparent access to PC & AMiga files from
either machine. There's a txt file in the BB/AMAX lib here describing it.
Just a thought, FYI. I haven't used it… only read about and spoken with
Consultron.

Just reread your message and I think you may have misunderstood. As well as
the Bridgeboard, I also now have a PC a few feet from the Amiga. For file
transfer between Amy and BB I use ATcopy/Awrite which work fine. To
transfer files between the Amy and the PC though I use a null modem link
between the PC and Bridgeboard with Twinexpress which saves having to use
floppies.
Why is it so expensive to add further serial/parallel ports to the Amiga?

hehe… 'cause it's an Amiga, silly.
The Amiga community is real need of a single card (one slot) that will add
one parallel port and one serial port to the A2000/A3000 and retail for
under $100. (Hey, pk, you listening?). These stupid switch boxes are
driving me nuts.
Since you have a BB… have you added an I/O card on that side of the
machine? I would think that would be VERY inexpensive ($19?), and using
AWrite you could move the file from the Amiga to the BB then throught the
null modem to the PC.

But you all forget one thing. Go try an expand an MS-DOS machine
with a card. Try to figure out the jumper settings in relationship to any
other cards you have in your machine. Let's see…which interupt jumpers
should be set, ok, now…how about the address of the card, oh yea…and
which DMA channel will it use. Multiple HD controllers…humm.
On the Amiga…you simply plug and go. The cards are intelligent,
they can set their own addresses and so forth on their own. Part of
auto-config.

You're right Don… I didn't even consider auto-config. From what you know
of Amiga hardware, is an Amiga 1 par/1 ser card for under a hundred bucks
too much to ask?

ASDG makes their TwinX board, and I'm 99% sure that you can add a
parallel module and a serial module to it. Not sure of the cost.
Then there's the A2232 board, adds 7 serial ports. Again, not sure
of the cost…although I'm sure it's over $100.
Auto-config circuitry does add to the cost.

naturally. It was the cheapest way to get round the lack of ports on the
Amiga side. I use ATcopy to move files from Amiga to BB, much better than
the C= offering and uses the standard file requestor and allows multiple
files to be transferred. I think I paid the equivalent of $20 for two
additional serial ports and fully agree that a cheap par/ser card for the
amiga would be popular although I understand that the I/O handling is non
standard and this is likely to remain another of those fantasies!
