HELP!! I have now tied for over an hour ON LINE to attempt to download
the lates WHAP!. absolutely no joy ay all. Frankly I am now totally
confused… ALL ? I want is simple keystrokes to find and download
the program, and also I have problems re speed 40cps, what is the
best way to improve on this. I have XModem, YModem, WXModem, CIS-B,
Quick-B, Kermit, ZModem, and Sadie ??. I just seem to be incapable of
acheiving a satisfactory rate for downloading, and in fact I have a
heck of a problem to even obtain ANY Downlods at all! I Run my own
BB, and as all other private ones I know, there is never any problems
at all, most do ZModem anyway, and it don't matter how you go on line
for the transfer, why on earth is Compuserve so blasted impenitrable,
any ideas,and its SLOOOWWWW. No Autowrap???, etc and finally on a
node is bloody expensive, and I cannot get any technical help to sort
out log on problems, my avarage success rate is about 1 in 3 OK..
Well after all that rambling, van anybody help ? Keith.

Use Quick-B protocol for all of your file transfers on CIS. You can 'test'
downloading by typing GO PARACTICE at any cis system prompt. PRACTICE is a
forum where normal connect charges are suspended, and you can download
files, read messages etc., without wastimg money.

Sorry you're having problems downloading. Until you get the hang of
things, you should trying to download from the Practice Forum (GO
PRACTICE). The (s]<tice Forum is FREE, so you can take your time while
learning. You should be using Quick-B protocol.
Which terminal program are you using? What terminal settings (Parity,
etc)?

Thanks for the help, you must be telepathic, the same answer was suggested
by someone else (75505,1757). I will try, but (as always), there is a
snag…. I have to pay a surcharge for the dubious use of British
Telecom,,uhgh. so sadly it still will cost,still it should at least be less
thanks Keith. p.s. I have just looked at my buffer (I never had before!),
and heck theres a hell of a lot of ^H 's etc etc, I hope they do not come
out your end, it took me ages to even get the amiga to destructive
backspace, beleive it or not, no one at cserve here could help!

CIS will do a destructive backspace…easily, but it does it by
sending a ^H space ^H.

thanks, however I have managed to get one key working ok, that is the left
arrow (delete-back), but the delete (straight), is way out, and since I am
used to an auto-wrap with every other file I use, I find this very
irritating, if I hit the delet key, a whole load of unremovable rubbish is
left on the screen. Thanks anyway,Keith.

Well…ok. But as to the DEL key…not sure what you all in the UK
have things setup…but here in the old US of A, delete removes the
character under the cursor. Since your cursor is always on the NEXT space
you'll type into, there's nothing under it to delete. Backspace on the
other hand, removes the character to the left of the cursor…as you've
noted.
CIS does nothing with the delete key, so if you're seeing some form
of effect, it probably has something to do with your network connection.

Use Quick-B as Whap! uses it. It gives the best rates for transfers.
Sign on to the practice forum to practice downloading wihtout hastle and
little cost. Then go to Amigavendor and select the ATI library. Type "DOW
Whap19g.lzh"! That should get the file.

Actually, Whap! uses B+. The difference between B+ and Quick-B is that B+
has the resumable download feature and it's block size is larger (1k blocks
compared to 512 byte blocks).

Keith, we have tried this before, but here goes again:
First of all, if you are a member of ICPUG, you can get the latest version
of WHAP from your ICPUG Amiga disk copier, because I sent it over to their
librarian as soon as it came out. If not, and you need to download it from
here, do this:
GO AMIGAVEND
LIB 9
DOW WHP19G.LZH PROTO:QB
(Set your terminal program for QuickB before you start.) Then, CompuServe
will ask, NAME FOR YOUR COMPUTER, and you give it the name of the path and
the filename you want it to have on your disk, such as (just an example)
RAM:WHAP.LZH
After you give the filename, CompuServe and your computer will do the rest.

Thanks, well I did download OK before, but I can only assume that something
h has altered since I was last on a long time back now, (ill health), as
far as I was concened was that I had already downloaded whap! and had no
luck at all this time, I am not to know of a change, and you are not
exepected to say when obviuosly, however whaen I first tried out whap! a
londg time ago, and had trouble with the sign on string, I dent a message
message, as asked in the literature, and got a very abrupt unhelpfull
answer, so i lost interest. What on earth is the point of stressing that
you must be sure it works ok before registering, and given a number to
contact, then seeming to dis a perfectly resonable question? sorry about
all the errors,but I have givn up the unequal struggle trying to use an
editor without wraparound, and a proper delete…. Thanks Keith
Keith,
The editor that comes with Whap! has wraparound and text can be edited
rather easily. It is definitely not a word processor, but it does make it
easy to compose messages, and it sends them back automatically.
Whap! really IS worth the effort of getting it going. When it is updated,
it is always to fix a problem with the system software of CompuServe. CIS
has made lots of changes in the past year, and those changes make it
necessary for the authors of Whap! to update it to match those changes.

Keith, I see you are still having problems getting Whap! running properly.
It sounds as if you haven't got the current version (1.9G). Mail me your
address and I will send you a copy on disk. Also, I believe you are using
Dialplus which gave me no end of problems too. Are you sure that direct
access to the ci$ London node is dearer bearing in mind the higher
communication surcharge for using Dialplus?
