I still have some openings for part-time employment for AmiEXPO this
weekend. I'm looking for folks to work Fri-Sun approx. 8 to 5. There is
pay involved – $8/hour, plus admission to the show, naturally. The work is
not intense, primarily taking tickets and monitoring seminar or class

BTW, did you guys ever get together with CBM and Hunter Group to figure out

Tell me Joe, Do you folks have any plans to conduct an AmiExpo in
Chicago… You know, one NOT being held at the same time as another major
Amiga event????

Joe, can you tell me when the Next New York City AmiExpo will be? I've only
seen a World of Amiga Show listed recently and have always been disapointed
with the lack of anything serious there.

The upcoming NYC World of Amiga promises to be one of the
more…intersting…shows in recent history. (I'll say no more 😉
What would be the cause of this show being interesting?

Seriously, though, look for some real news to come out of the show.
Look at it this way… I was originally going to attend the Computer Game
Developers' Conference that weekend (a great conference), and I changed my
plans….
(And THAT'S all I'm saying. 😉

bridgeboard at the show?

I really don't know. Both of those would be great. All I know for sure is
that, at this moment in time, it's very likely that someone will introduce
some Neat Stuff. Of course, that could easily change in two months…

You know, I was sitting around today thinking about what would happen to
the sales (and resale value) of CDTV players once the A500/CDTV drive came
out. After all, you'd guess that most CDTV sales here have been to Amiga
owners, and doesn't a more expandable system make more sense to buy?

Maybe that's one reason it's been delayed? (To give CDTV a chance to sell
at first?)

That would imply CBM was serious about selling CDTV in the first place
<GRIN>.
In my opinion, several things would have to be done to make CDTV more
viable.
– Give CDTV (and the Amigas) some new technology in the video hardware and
audio hardware area
– Give it more memory
– Faster CPU. At least a 68020 doing 14.3 MHz. By the time they could
design such a thing, it would probably be cheap enough to go to a 25 MHz
68030.
– Put a SCSI port on the device so in stand alone mode it can drive a hard
drive, or in network mode it can be another device connected to a regular
Amiga. Would allow sharing the parallel and serial port on the CDTV as if
they were on the Amiga. If they have DIG done by then, could use the video
capabilities as another monitor output. Hmmm.. revision time. No, don't
make the SCSI built in, but provide a header connector and two low cost
(under $100) boards to plug into the header. One is a SCSI interface, the
other is an ethernet interface. So if the unit was to be standalone, a
person could get the scsi card, but if they wanted to network it, get the
ethernet board.
– Sell it for under US$800 with all the above!

Surprise: it has the header already; it connects to a DMA port for SCSI
cards and network cards.

Doesn't the expansion slot in CDTV get used by some graphic card? If so,
then it fails the "guidelines" in my previous message.
Is there a SCSI or Ethernet card available for the CDTV yet? Probably
still need a floppy to boot from with the network stuff on it.

There are two slots on the rear of the CDTV unit…a video slot and a DMA
expansion slot.
The SCSI card was produced in small quantities for developers; its the
same SCSI card that would plug into the 690, as a matter of fact. Since the
CDTV system rom already contains the driver for the card, it would be
autoboot. A network card would require a rom to autoboot.

I thought of that too. But really doesn't Commodore have a much larger
audience than a small percentage of Amiga owners in mind for CDTV? They
should have released these drives for 500's, 2000's and 3000's a long time
ago. Many more units would have been sold and it would have fueled
development which in turn would improve the stand alone package for the
general consumer.
